Apulia or Puglia? Well, there is no doubt about the rich and colourful geological formation of this hidden territory; whether you take a geographical, historical or morphological point of view. As a first time visitor, the vastness of this sub-Mediterranean region of Italy from the Terra of Bari to Salento, provides many dominating, surprising and individualistic elements.
Surrounded by bodies of water with nor a beginning nor an end...panoramic routes that trip the coastline, olive trees on mass as far as the eye can see, hilltop villages, sleepy lagoons and underground caverns and grottoes.
Puglia is a region to be visited in all four seasons with a meteorological climate encouraging the preservation of vast natural reserves such as Torre Guaceto and unusal animal and wildlife habitation which can be experienced at the Zoo Safari Fasano.
Many of the major attractions of the Valle d'Itria are on the doorstep of Villa Mandorle; Alberobello, Martina Franca, Ostuni and Locorotondo and a short hop to some of the coastal towns such as the picturesque Polignano a Mare, popular holiday resort of Torre Canne or the local fishing town of Monopoli.
Cisternino is a local market town turn festival city during the summer months. Many of the local areas celebrate local produce of food and wine with a festa called a "Sagra" whlich is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself into the Pugliese lifestyle and culture but equally taste some of the gasgtronomic delights on offer.
Two important music festivals are featured in August in the Cisternino area. The AlterFesta takes place around the most important national festival day of the year, the 15th August; Assunzione a religious festival and at the end of August begins the festival "Pietre che cantano" with a string of bands and music concerts to entertain all ages with dancing and animation in the streets of the historic town.
There are many sporting opportunities for the energetic, with bike tours passing through the masserie and trulli countryside or choose a water sport with rafting or torrent walking, plus much much more.
