Sicily, is the biggest island in the Mediterranean sea and it is a world of its own: there are cities with their ancient history, many archeological sites, beautiful and wild mountains, the highest vulcano in Europe,a rich and old cuisine and of course the sea.
Scopello is a charming village perched on the top of a hill with splendid vistas on the sea and the surrounding mountains. The nearby Zingaro Reserve (2,5 km away) is a nature and marine reserve which extends along the north-west coast, from Scopello to San Vito lo Capo. It is characterized by a native Mediterranean maquis brushing the sea. Along the coast there are various inlets and beaches which can be reached by trails along the route. At the entrance there is an ample parking lot and an information center where you can buy your entry tickets and find a map. Inside the reserve are two museums and several rest areas.
The Scopello area is also famous for the scenic Tonnara (a tuna fishery, often used for film sets), where it is possible to swim and sunbathe. Within the surrounding area, apart from Baglio di Scopello where there are a few bars and restaurants, day-trips are possible to the archeological parks of Selinunte and Segesta, the medieval town of Erice and the Stagnone Reserve in Marsala. The city of Palermo is less than an hour away by car. A highly-recommended day-trip is to the nearby Egadi Islands, including vibrant Favignana and pristine Marettimo, which is a marine reserve. For wine lovers there is a range of wineries to visit (some with excellent restaurants). For diving enthusiasts there are many interesting excursions organized by the Cetaria diving club located in the village of Scopello.
