Majorca or Mallorca is an island located in the Mediterranean Sea, one of the Balearic Islands.
The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands.
Like the other Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Formentera and Minorca, the island is a highly popular holiday destination. Temperatures are between around 30 degrees in the summer and mild winters down to 15 degrees celsius in January.
The cuisine is diverse and loved by many. Despite Majorca’s location in the Mediterranean, seafood is often imported. Olives and almonds are typical of the Majorcan diet. The island has over 4 million almond and olive trees. Among the food items that are Majorcan are sobrassada, arros brut (saffron rice cooked with chicken, pork and vegetables), and the sweet pastry ensaïmada.
Originally a small fishing villige, Port d’Andratx and it’s picturesque surroundings have developed into a popular locality with a large marina that bustles with traffic.
It is possible to hire boats in all sizes, both with and without crew.
There are many cosy outdoor restaurants and cafés along the harbour front, offering Majorcan cuisine and wine served with a view over the water. Mallorca is influenced by mainland Catalunyan culture with shellfish, squid and fish being essentiel ingredients in the island’s gastronomy.
In terms of nightlife, the town also has a discotheque.
