Portugals Silver Coast is rugged and quite sparsely populated. It has a spectacular coast with beautiful clean beaches swept by Atlantic rollers and in many cases backed by majestic sandstone cliffs. Obidos Laggoon is a large sheltered salt water laggon with safe swimming and canoeing. Alond the coast are interesting places like Peniche, San Martinho do Porto and Nazare. Inlnd you can shop and explore at Caldas da Rainha, Rio Major, Alcobaca, Santarem and elsewhere. Many of the towns boast impressive historic sites. The motorways make it very easy to get about and the local roads are also very good and not usually busy outside commuting times.
Obidos is the most stunning, well preserved, medieval town. It has the most complete walls of any town in Europe and is known as the wedding present town because an early king of Portugal loved it so much he gave it to his bride as a wedding present. Obidos has lots of little shops, restaurants and bars with a very good supermarket about half a mile outside of town. A Google search will provide lots more details including the many festivals which include theatre, classical music, Christmas and the biggest CHOCOLATE festival in Europe!
