The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Marseillan is one of the oldest villages in France and was founded around 535 BC.

Marseillan became the entry port for the Canal du Midi in 1681. Oysters from the salt-water lake are famous throughout France, and make up 10% of all oysters consumed in France.

If you like to be on the water, sailing can be arranged from the local Marseillan marina on a beautiful yacht with skipper (with or without lunch)

Historical places to drive to include Pezenas, Carcassonne, Sete, Nimes and Montpellier.

Lovely villages to drive to include Bages, Peyriac sur Mer, St. Guilhem le Desert, Uzes, Aigues Mortes and Clermont-l'Herault.

If you can drag yourself away from Marseillan and its lovely restaurants (portside restaurants just a few minutes walk), village life, boating activities and nearby beaches, within a short drive (minutes away) are some fabulous massive sandy beaches with beach bars and resaurants galore. Also a little further are wonderful towns such as Pezenas, Sete and Montpellier with many cultural activities.

Just over one hour away is the town of Carcassonne. A drive along the Cathar route from Bezier is delightful as is a light oyster or mussel lunch with local wine in the aptly named nearby village Bouzigues!

Or stay in Marseillan and enjoy a day out sailing on a yacht (with a qualified skipper) or take part in watersports from the local beach (kayaks, paddle-boarding etc)
