Fully renovated from 2005 onwards and meticulously converted by the owners, the house now offers a traditional old-style Bearnaise environment for an enchanting and comfortable country based holiday retreat. Ideally suited to one or two week breaks between Spring and Autumn.

A great heavy old door leads onto original Ardoise slate flooring, wood burner fireplace, stone walls and open beams – all help create a traditional but very comfortable setting in the lounge and old Bearnais fireside areas. The house has discrete central heating and all the added modern facilities expected for today- WiFi for e-mail and Internet connection, CD Music player, DVD and TV set to France's TNTsat- but has English News (BBC World News etc;) crucially without spoiling the internal or external traditional 'country style' feel of the inside and outside of the building.

There is a well serviced family kitchen providing all modern comforts- dishwasher, electric hob & oven and low level fridge and freezer. But arranged in a country style with oak worktop, hand made tiling on the floor and a generous French cabinet for storage of food, utensiles and crockery. A wood and charcoal based barbeque is also supplied to eat al fresco in the garden. For your convenience there are always basic supplies provided -we ask guest to use, but please top up or replace on a 'like for like' basis. Thanks.

The main, double bedroom is cosy, very French…. and traditionally simple! With painted wooden floors and open oak beams throughout the upstairs.. The second bedroom has antique bedsteads with new mattresses made to fit - one 3/4 (120cm) size bed and one large single (100cm) making it a flexible and comfy room for either children or guests.

The whole house retains an authentic, rough & country style throughout but with many more modern touches and home comforts than you would perhaps expect! The spectacular, spacious bathroom has wood everywhere as well as a spacious rain shower cubicle, massive bath and stone based sink- covering all tastes and preferences.

Further details outdoors

There is a large walled garden with a number of trees and 2 terraces (one covered ). Ample parking within grounds and metal gates open onto a small, quiet country lane which leads down to the mountain river. Swimming in the river is braising but wonderful fun! It's a short car ride (or nice walk) to the nearby town (Sauveterre de Bearn 2km).Other nearby towns / cities are Oloron, Pau, Salies de Bearn and Biaritz.

"many many thanks for what was a really wonderful stay in your Little House in Camu- loved the peace & calm and the garden was perfect for us all"

"I strangely slept perfectly there!...while our boys totally loved the big garden and the river rafting was a massive hit"

"mightly impressed with your restoration work at The Little House and would not hesitate to stay again"

"lovely, everything , a place to chill out completely, just what we both wanted. ...and the area was a pleasant surprise to us so we will be back!"

".....the house is beautiful and full of charm and the neighbours have been invariably friendly and welcoming. We just wish we had been here in summer rather than during a winter which all the locals tell us is particularly cold". (November /December let)

The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

There are three major mountain rivers (Gaves) in the area- Gave de Pau, Le Saison and Le Gave d’Oloron. All stem from the ice melting in the Pyrenees Mountains (South) and rise in the Easter to impressive heights and speeds- providing a perfect settings for fisherman and summer season rafters.

Within an hour you can drive to some of the most spectacular and beautiful places in Aquitaine and the South West - here are some suggestions:

Sauveterre -the local town has a 12th C. Church, a famous 11th C. bridge and monastry walls. There are a few basic shops, a helpful tourist office and bank in the square, (Market is Saturday) and a terrific boulangerie - best croissant in the area!. Enjoy the spectacular views from the terrace by the church then follow the steep path down to the riverside, for a splash in the Gave or go across to the little island.

While around 15-20 minutes drive away the medieval spa town of Salies-de-Bearn is an enchanting and memorable visit- it has a Casino, Salt Spa and many interesting local arts and craft shops and events- Market day is Thursday.

The glorious Pyrenees hills and mountains offer walking, skiing and beautiful spots for a simple picnic and are home to unique wildlife including vultures and even a few bears! In the mountains pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostello in Spain are a common sight along with classic Pyreneean Dogs- famous as mountain guides!

Then there is surfing at the spectacular, long beaches of the Landes coast, fashionable Biarritz with it's famous surfing competitions and the charminfg fishing port of St Jean-de Luz - all about 1 hours drive from the house.

Bordeaux is just 2 hours away and offers one of France's most elegant and spirited centres and of course there are vineyards selling 'direct' throughout the region. Try the rosé of Salies-de-Bearn, the wonderful whites of Jurancon near Pau or the deep, rich red of our local Madiran.

Sauveterre de Bearn

Spend a day white water rafting on the Gave d'Oloron or just wander down the lane in mid-afternoon to watch other rafters skimming past . The unspoilt ancient towns of Sauveterre, Naverrenx, Salies-de-Bearn and Orthez., are worht exploring. Not forgetting the typical Basque town of St Palais (15 minsutes away) -all the local towns have their own weekly markets and fetes during the summer months.

The Chateau de Laas (open to the public) in the beautiful village of Laas is just 10 mins from the house or cycle there and have a delicious lunch in the auberge. There are numerous cycling routes away from the traffic along old farm roads, tennis courts ( one in the village and more in Sauveterre) and Spa Baths, horse riding and golf all nearby.
