The Andalucia region

Comares, our local town hall, (15mins) is one of the highest pueblo blancos in Andalucia and stands 739 meters above sea level. It dates from medieval times and has a history of rebellion against Muslim and Christian rulers. Of interest to visitors are a series of ceramic plaques which depict the pueblos history. Medieval arches and foot print paving tiles which are a guide to the main streets.

There is also an old Moorish fortress, once a Roman military outpost, known as La Tahona where two turrets are still intact.

Velez Malaga

Velez Malaga, the capital town of Axarquia, is 14 km and the beach town of Torre del Mar is a further 4 km. Velez origins go back to Phoenician and Carthaginian times. The town was also important in both Roman times, when it was known as 'Menoba' and in Moorish times when as Ballax-Malaga (Fortress of Malaga) it had an important role in subduing what was always a turbulent region. In 1487 the Moors were finally ejected by King Ferdinand however they left behind a rich culture of architecture and the town also has many fine examples of 16th and 17th century palaces.

Velez also offers many good bars and restaurants and shopping. The shopping mall, El Ingenio, has many shops including the hypermarket Eroski where you can find almost anything. Also in the complex are many restaurants, bowling alley and cinemas.

For everyday needs the local village has two supermarkets, banks, bars, a street market on wednesday and is only ten minutes away. Also the village has a 24hr medical centre.
