The Algarve region

Burgau is a charming fishing village located 10 minutes drive west of Lagos in the Algarve Portugal. It has more than a dozen restaurants and bars, with a laid back feel and a village full of atmosphere. If you have the ‘Burgau bug’ already then any description will not be sufficient, but peaceful, unspoilt (almost) and friendly is a good place to begin. Its unique charm is the villages ability to appeal to everyone, regardless of age or interests. People who have been once usually come back time after time. It has an X factor that has to be experienced. For those who haven’t experienced Burgau or maybe have been to the other end of the Algarve or have never even been to Portugal here’s the facts.

Burgau can be found about 90km west of Faro Airport. That’s about 1 hour in a car ( shorter if you take a taxi!).

Burgau is nestled on the edge of a national park. It is still a working fishing village and watching the boats bobbing on the moonlit waters is a great sight.

The beach is beautiful and you are awarded a gorgeous sandy blanket on which to wallow away those lazy days. Those that can’t sit still can choose to run/walk up the big hill that is the backdrop to Burgau (see pictures on main page….but beware its bigger than it looks especially if like a mad dog you try it in the midday sun!). Walks are fantastically rewarding around Burgau, try the coastal walk to the next village Luz or the other way to Salema. Anybody that likes to explore can really enjoy Burgau as their base to travel to the west coat (beautiful beaches/surfing). Monchique (mountains/ chicken piri piri) .Sagres (the end of the world/great sunsets)

Burgau

Lagos is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve, with itsmany tourist-friendly beaches, bars, restaurants, and hotels, well-known for its vibrant summer nightlife and parties. Yet, Lagos is also a historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequent home of Henry the Navigator, historical shipyard and, at one time, centre of the European slave trade. In 2012, travel website TripAdvisor, classified Lagos as the favourite travel destination, on a list of 15 cities in the world.

Lagos is full of history, but it is also a town with a lot going on - the next square along, in the center of town, is Praça de Gil Eanes and this is often the setting for evening entertainment throughout the year - a comical unicyclist, live music or a medieval fair are just a few of the events we have enjoyed. If Portugal are playing football, or there is a major competition on, the cafes will have the big screens up in the square and everyone joins in the excitement (very good naturedly as well).

There are many streets leading off Praça de Gil Eanes, with restaurants to suit all tastes! The centre of Lagos really isn't very big, but it can be a bit confusing! There are so many little streets criss-crossing that it is quite easy to loose your bearings, but to be honest, as long as you head down hill you are sure to get back to the centre! There are loads of bars that stay open until the early hours and in the summer time the centre of town is alive with people of all ages enjoying life. There are always touts from the different bars offering a free drink or 'shot' at 'their' bar, but it can be a useful way to find them as they are often tucked away down one of the many little side streets.
