It is one of the largest towns of Rhodes, with about 6,700 permanent residents, located on the east coast, about 21 km from Rhodes City.
It is built between three hills and many argue that it was named due to its location, which was chosen so as not different from the pirates. So then village, now the city, was invisible, unseen.
Some others believe that the village was named after a wealthy landowner who lived there, the Efantos.
Remnants of ancient monuments, temples and tombs, are preserved today in the area of Afandou, as the evidence of a greater ancient civilization.
The town of Afandou is famous for its huge beach, perhaps the most popular on the island, which is approximately five kilometers, consisting of small pebbles and sand, and is just 2km from the city center.
In the town square, where it is located the City Hall, full of cafes, is dominated by the three entities church of Our LADY, the beautiful and tall bell tower.
Because of the intense interest in the tourist area of the city, there were built modern HOTELSand smaller accommodation, and many tourist facilities for the number of tourists who come here to enjoy the hospitality, the crystal sea, clean beach and the bright sun.
Afandou village is one of the largest villages in Rhodes, with a population of about 6700 people, it is located about 21 Km from the town of Rhodes.
It has a very long history, but the main reason for visiting Afandou (Afantou) is the 4Km long beach, one of the best beaches in Rhodes, because of the clean and crystal clear waters, the convenient small pebbles and sand in some places, and the option to find a spot at an organised site with umbrellas, showers and canteens or a more quiet spot on your own. The waters are usually calm since the WIND during the summer blows from the beach towards the sea.
Watersports are available at the organised parts of the beach.
Afandou area has also the Afandou Golf course which is the only Golf course in Rhodes Island, at a great location by the beach... It is an 18 hole course.
At the beach, there are quite a few small canteens, and further around the area quite a few restaurants / tavernas offering anything from local fresh fish to international food.
At the village you can go for a coffee at the cafeterias in the main square, and take the car-train to the beach and back. Also a folklore exhibition is worth visiting. The village has large lands cultivated with Olive trees and various fruit-bearing trees, and the main occupation for the residents has been Tourism in the past few years, before that though it has been mainly agriculture.
