The Famagusta region

Famagusta is a region situated on the South East coast of Cyprus. It boasts some of the best beaches on the island including Pernera, Protaras, Konnos Bay out to Ayia Napa, any of which can be reached in a short time by car.

During the summer months, the region comes to life with tourists flocking to the area to relax on the beaches, sample the water sports, visit the historical churches and museums and experience the busy night-life of Ayia Napa. The season is a long one with superb weather from April right through to November.

Home to the Kokkinochoiria (red soil) villages where the tasty Cyprus potato is grown, and the hundreds of windmills, Famagusta still has the feeling of stepping back to more traditional Cyprus times.

Protaras is a picturesque bay with crystal bright waters and golden sand. In one of its bays, commonly known by the name Fig Tree Bay, there is a small island in about 100 metres from the shore.

This area was and still is the most productive area of Paralimni. Hundreds of watermills situated in the area provide a special picturesque image and are at the same time a testimony of the way the land was used in the last fifty years.

Visit the centre of Paralimni with the largest sacred square in Cyprus which includes three churches. Two of the churches are dedicated to St. George and the third is an ancient Byzantine church dedicated to St Anna. Today, this church belongs to the Department of Antiquities and is one of the popular historic sites visited by many tourists.

Shortly before the centre of the tourist area of Protaras, you will find the chapel of Prophet Elias. It is built on a granite hill with almost vertical sides. A Byzantine type church was built in the past few years in order to replace the small room which was used as a church. In order to reach the chapel, one has to climb a set of 153 stone-built steep stairs, but once you get there, the view rewards the visitor.

Located near Cape Greco, only a short distance from the sea is a beautiful chapel dedicated to Agious Anargyrous (Kosmas and Damianos). The lovers of nature, apart from the pilgrimage, will also enjoy the wonderful scenery surrounding the chapel of Ayia Saranta which you can find dug into the rocks.

Protaras being only a few kilometres away from the popular destination of Ayia Napa has quickly expanded into a resort of considerable size with plenty of high capacity hotels, hotel apartments, villas, restaurants, pubs and all sorts of facilities which a modern holiday resort should have. Being quieter than Ayia Napa and having less of a club scene, it has a reputation of catering more for family and Cypriot tourism.

Cape Greco, a 10 minute drive from the centre of Protaras, is considered one of the most beautiful places on the island. Here lives the reputed Ayia Napa Sea Monster which is meant to resemble a cross between a dolphin and a dragon.

The shops in Protaras centre provide everything required by holidaymakers; from beach equipment to souvenirs. There are several hundred retail establishments in the resort including supermarkets, clothing stores and jewellers.

Protaras has dozens of restaurants and fast food outlets, mainly catering for the usual tourist desires. Many local establishments are run by British ex-pats. Visitors who enjoy making the most of the local produce should try one of the many open-air seafood restaurants.

At night Protaras main street turns into a lively street as the many bars, pubs and clubs turn up the volume to draw in the crowds for a party. Many establishments offer live entertainment or karaoke and the clubs feature English DJs and laser lights. There are only a few nightclubs, so should you wish to go for an all night club experience you can venture to the neighbouring area of Ayia Napa for the evening.

The main beach at Protaras offers a vast range of water sports from paddle boats to jet skis. The resort caters particularly well for children, most of the hotels and apartment complexes offering excellent Kid's Clubs.

There are two enjoyable water parks nearby in Ayia Napa, providing for a fun day for the whole family.

Most visitors enjoy a stroll along the top of the cliffs of the coastline; especially in spring when the landscape is covered with wild flowers.
