La Residence is a stylish l8th Century Gascon Maison de Maitre just off the town square. It's the perfect base to enjoy life in a popular French Village, yet offers all the amenities of a very comfortable, elegantly furnished home with a stylish courtyard swimming pool as an oasis away from the heat of the village square. Being our second home, we've fixed the place up to suit our every need - which we hope is your every need too! We like to sunbathe and read quietly. We love having friends over for meals so you'll enjoy our kitchen and we love being right in the centre of things, never really needing to get into the car as everything you need for your immediate enjoyment is right here, right in the town. When you need to get out Valence is very well positioned right in the centre of all the historical, cultural and sporting sites. You couldn't be better placed - that's why we've bought several properties here!! There's a popular swimming lake 6kms away, canoeing on our local river, Tree walking in Auch. Our 12th Century Abbaye de Flaran has a permanent exhibition of 20th Century art including Monet, Picasso etc.
Nearby the Cathedral town of Condom, the mediaeval towns of Fources and Larressingle and the Roman
Mosaics near Montreal. There's something to suit all tastes We like to cycle across the undulating vineyards, but it's also very popular with hikers. We can arrange tastings at a number of local chateaux and fois gras farms that this area's famous for.
We are on hand to offer help and advice about any aspect of your holiday whether it's bike hire, booking tables, suggesting village fetes to visit. We can also arrange degustations of Armagnac and fois gras at a number of local chateaux and farms run by friends and good contacts of ours to ensure special treatment. We want you to have a good time!

There's a large farmhouse style kitchen complete with American Fridge Freezer with its cold water and ice dispenser. The range cooker has 5 gas hobs and the kitchen is equipped for the enthusiastic cook with many
large casserole pots and many platters. This is our home for the rest of the year, so it's equipped with all the
batterie de cuisine, cookery books and furnishings that go with a family home rather than just a holiday rental.
In the sitting room there's a vast collection of films on vhs & dvd. The UK Free Sat is the recordable type and we've
just installed a 48" LG LCD TV.
We've also got an excellent selection of books and games.
There's a darts board set up at the far end of the courtyard and the games room by the swimming pool has a
half size snooker table.
Although there's no central heating in the house, we've got electric radiators and electric blankets in all the
rooms and there are 14kw output (i.e. very hot) woodburning stoves in both the kitchen and the living room which keeps those rooms very warm for cosy winter gatherings.
For winter rentals we have to charge the electricity and for logs which we'll order specially for your booking.
There's WiFi at the property and we allow the unlimited use of the telephone to not only landlines in France and the UK but a number of other countries.
|Further details outdoors|
There's free parking on the street outside La Residence.
The Courtyard is attractively styled with plenty of seating both in the sun and for reading comfortably in the shade.
We've created a Moroccan style built-in seating area with table for 12 under the roof terrace with its outdoor kitchen.
This house is for serious entertaining! We have home cinema with a fantastic sound system that is ideal for
a party. This is where the snooker table is.
We've got 5/6 bikes for our guests' use with helmets and bike locks. The surrounding country lanes are perfect for
cycling, with almost no traffic, past gently undulating very picturesque vineyards and slopes of sunflowers.
There's also excellent fishing in the river below, licences available at the local Tabac
Canoeing is just 3kms away at Beaucaire and we've had tremendous reports from delighted guests as it's not just
paddling along - they shoot the rapids and go vertically down waterfalls! Though I gather you could just potter about
quietly as well.
The house is furnished with a mixture of antique and reproduction furniture that we ask our guests to take care of. Our home is probably not ideal for very young families who might not have enough space outside to run around, though the village square is just outside and there's an imaginatively built toddler's playground nearby.
From the double fronted front door throughout the house there are double doors into every room, making the house possible for wheelchair access.
There is a double sofa bed downstairs next to a spacious shower room/wc which we are told would be suitable for a guest with limited mobility.
We say yes to pets but ask that pets are kept downstairs please.
Sunny and warm from April right through to November, the Gers is a rural sub region of the Midi Pyrenees full of the mediaeval history of this heart of Gascony with its many Armagnac chateaux and duck fois gras farms.
Considered to be one of the richest regions in France both agriculturally and culinarily, the Gers is very popular with French holiday makers.
It's worth pointing out to the intrepid explorers that the Spanish border is just under 2 hours away. The Atlantic Ocean is
about 1.5 hours away, due West. Slightly further down is Biarritz at 1.45 hours.
The nearest ski resort is Luchon, 1.5 hours away.
Lourdes is a popular destination with some of our guests being 2 hours away (145kms)
Valence-sur-Baise is on the route of St Jacques de Compostela and there are many monuments on the roadside celebrating this pilgrimage. In our Abbaye de Flaran there's a separate museum devoted to this pilgrimage.
12th Century Abbaye de Flaran at Valence with its cloisters, magnificent chapel and fabulous permanent art exhibition housing some of the finest works of 20th Century art including Monet, Pissaro, Picasso etc.
Naif Art Museum at nearby Beraut.
TREE CLIMBING 20kms away near Auch; Canoeing on the river Baise 3kms away; swimming at the nearby Lake at Castera Verduzan with its pedaloes and children's paddling pool, slides etc. Castera also has a health spa and Casino. Horse riding on outskirts of town. Several Golf courses within 30 minutes: Fleurance & Auch.
Fishing permits are available from the Tabac for lake and river fishing in and around the village.
Throughout the summer Valence and all the nearby villages organise cycle and walking outings with generous refreshments usually ending with a huge paella. There are boules tournaments going on most of the summer as well as the local Gascon Quilles - skittles to the English.
We particularly like that being where the French go on holiday, there are so many essentially French holiday pasttimes and holiday celebrations and they are delighted when visitors to the area join in. They are very welcoming though be prepared, as very little English is spoken amongst the locals.
