Sawdays description "The sky-blue façade and white windows inspire thoughts of puffy clouds and sunny days spent sailing, swimming, lazing. Squeezed into the heart of Dartmouth – the street so narrow you can shake hands, almost, with the opposite neighbours – this pretty Georgian house is minutes from sea, clifftop and river. Front steps (perfect for evening drinks) lead into bold, bright rooms that showcase the owners' artist-designer skills: zinging colours, original paintings, prints and quirky objets. There are comfy sofas, a generous dining table and funky lights. The long kitchen, smart in beech and chrome, has plenty of kit and workspace. Upstairs are two pretty bedrooms, with painted floorboards, vintage and modern furnishings, splashes of colour.
One peeps over the harbour, the other has a terrace for al fresco meals. Up again is a children's room with its own landing play space. You'll also find a highchair, cots, books and games; the owners (who live nearby), have thought of everything. Forget the car (it's permit parking in the nearby car park) and get on with the fun: boats, walks, harbour, galleries, restaurants."

Dartmouth is in the South Hams, an area of outstanding beauty within South Devon with its rugged coastline, beautiful beaches and rolling countryside. It has some of the most commended beaches in England close by, ideal for that relaxing lazy day. The award-winning, Blackpool Sands beach is within 10 minutes drive and recently earned the accolade of being named Britain's Best Family Beach by Conde Nast Traveller thanks to its handy car parking, cafe serving healthy kids meals and brilliant sand pit, which is ideal for little ones to sit and play in safety, as well as the wide sandy bay with shallow waters. Further along the coast, North Sands Salcombe, Lanacombe & Bantham to name a few among our favourites.
A spectacular deep-water harbour has enabled Dartmouth to boast over 900 years of maritime history and discovery. The river provides a fascinating and continually changing panorama of activity with fishing boats, ferries, yachts, and on occasions, cruise ships or frigates and submarines visiting the Britannia Royal Naval College. For those who like to let their hair down, there's Dartmouth Regatta, Dartmouth Music Festival, or New Years Eve when the whole town comes out in fancy dress.
As a prosperous port her architectural legacy is also impressive with Elizabethan and Tudor buildings lining the streets. As well as Dartmouth's rich history there are also many specialist shops, great restaurants and bars. If you would prefer a less strenuous way of discovering the area, why not take a trip on the Steam train, which travels through beautiful scenery all the way along the coast to Paignton. The Dart Estuary can also be explored by taking one of the many riverboat trips available from the Quay. The trip up the river to Totnes reveals a wildlife haven and superb views of this undulating landscape. A wonderful day out is a combination of the steam train and boat to make the popular circular trip known as 'The round Robin'.
There are many local attractions to keep children happy such as crab catching along the embankment, otter and butterfly sanctuaries, Pennywell children's farm, Woodland Leisure Park just 5-minutes drive out of the town - a spectacular adventure filled experience guaranteed to tire out the whole family. Dartmouth is a great base for the action activity/holiday, with lots of fantastic walking and cycling on Dartmoor, or experience the South West Coast path. Dartmouth is of course synonymous with sailing; there are lots of opportunities to take to the water. Take a boat trip up the river Dart for a picnic at your leisure or charter an ocean going racing yacht. Golfing enthusiasts are well catered for, with the interesting golf course at Dartmouth golf and Country club a short distance away, with another 3 great courses in the area.
Known as one of the UK's most popular yachting havens, the town boasts a great selection of independent boutiques, bistros, cafes and convenient shops along its pretty cobbled streets.
