The Midi-Pyrenees region

La Douce Folly, is located near Galan in the Hautes-Pyrénées. It is a region blessed with stunning scenery, world-famous food, wine, good living and also boasts a large number of centenarian inhabitants due to the healthy lifestyle!

The holiday villa built in the 19th century is a cross between a 2nd Empire Gascony farmhouse and a maison-de-maître, has been renovated with respect to its original features whilst incorporating modern conveniences.

In terms of the Folly's amenities, other than your newly renovated bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. There is a formal dining room and salon along with a games and video room. The kitchen is also newly renovated in a French-country style, and includes all the mod cons. There are several private shaded areas for quiet reading, large lawns for children. We have volley ball, boules, games, books and plenty of local information for sightseeing. A welcome basket will be placed in the accommodation for your arrival.

We also provide WiFi for internet access, use of a computer, wide-screen TV with English, French and some American channels via satellite, a large library of English and French DVDs, and a stereo system with a wide variety of music CDs. There is also a docking/speaker station for iPod and iPhone users.

Trie-sur-Baise

Our valley is called “Le Petit Nice” by the locals for its warmer micro-climate and the many fruit tree orchards. The views are open and wide and due to being south facing, also extremely sunny. We are in a great location for walkers, hikers, cyclists (the Tour de France passes through the area), plus snow-shoeing, downhill and alpine skiing and for those who enjoy wildlife.

The nearest large village, Galan, a 5 minute drive has a post-office, boulangerie, tabac, small food shop, hair salon, bar and restaurant, plus a reknown cathedral famed for it's year-around classical concerts. The closest towns are Trie-sur-Baïse (12 minute drive) and Lannemezan (20 minute drive), where both offer a wide variety of shops, restaurants, bars, banks, medical facilities, cinemas, etc., and weekly markets.

There are many spa towns within an easy drive, where the thermal hot spring waters are a marvellous treat for mind and body. Our favourites are the historic spa town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre that has a modern day spa resort called Aquensis, and is about a 40 minute drive. Another favourite is in Capvern-les-Bain, 20 minutes away.

Other nearby areas of interest include Pau, a beautiful 2nd Empire gem (like a mini-Paris in the Pyrénées), with lashings of culture, restaurants, shopping, theatre, and opera. The shrine at Lourdes draws the Christian world and is an mesmerizing place to visit regardless of your spiritual beliefs. And with a castle, funicular, lake, golf course, markets - Lourdes is not just for pilgrims. We also recommend picturesque Marciac, world-famous for it's annual Jazz Festival, but in fact you can catch a concert every month. Likewise in Mirande, which is known for being France's mecca for American country, blue-grass, and rockabilly music.
