The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Bansko is located in the South West of Bulgaria in the province of Blagoevgrad. The town is in a beautiful region, surrounded by the Pirin and Rila mountains, which provide an abundance of hiking and walking opportunities during the warm summers, or even golf on the Ian Woosnam designed course on the outskirts of town in the Razlog valley. Other summer activities include mountaineering, mountain biking, white water rafting and horse riding.

The Pirin is a national preserve which is included in the UNESCO WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE list. It is a glacial created landscape with high peaks, deep valleys and many lakes. Due to its location near to the Mediterranean, it has a very high number of sunny days during the year. The highest peak is the Vihren, reaching 2914m, and its glacial lakes number approximately 150. The Pirin National Park is known for some of the best walking in Europe and much of the skiing is located on these mountains.

The Rila are the highest mountains in Bulgaria. Again it is blessed with a beautiful landscape of Alpine peaks, lakes and glacial valleys. Moussala is the highest mountain (2925m), and it is also famed for its walks around its lakes, the most famous of which are the 7 Rila lakes in Northwestern Rila.

The Skiing

Bansko is one of the most modern ski resorts in Europe, and is Bulgaria’s biggest ski resort with a long running skiing season from mid December to the end of April. Of the three ski resorts in Bulgaria, Bansko has always been the most reliable for an abundance of snow due to its location.

The ski runs are situated in 2 main areas - Chalin Valog (1100-1600m above sea level) and Shiligarnika (1700-2500m above sea level), on the northern slopes of the Pirin. With red, blue and a black run, there is skiing for all difficulty levels. The slopes are easily accessed from the gondola which is just 300m from the New Inn apartment.

There is also a snowboard fun park in the Shiligarnika ski area, where boarders have the opportunity to build their own jumps and competitions are held each day for skiers and boarders to take part in. It is also possible to take a 16km run all the way from the mountain back to the town of Bansko at the end of the day.

Town of Bansko

The beauty of Bansko is that it is not just a ski center, but a charming historical town that captivates its visitors. This is why it is also a popular summer resort. Walking around the quaint town you will be struck by its beautiful architecture and tradition. Eat or drink at the famous local taverns, called Mehanas, which have been created from family homes. There are nearly 100 in the area to choose from, serving local cuisine and wines, and often providing live folk music too. And the added bonus is the cheap prices for all of this - you will struggle to find another ski resort that has such reasonable prices to go and enjoy an evening out!

You will see many local cafes and bars around the town, and there are also some discos and night clubs if you like good night life. The old town square is only a 10-15 minute walk from the New Inn, and you can walk there by Pirin Street which has many traditional and modern shops, ski shops, banks, post offices and a supermarket.
