The Swiss Alps region

The Valais region of Switzerland is a beautiful part of the country, whatever time of year you are planning to visit. It is home to Switzerland's highest mountains, which provide endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Boasting 300 days of sunshine a year and some of the most stunning mountain scenery in the country, Valais is a fantastic place to visit year round.

In winter, as well as ample on and off-piste runs in Leukerbad itself, the nearby world famous ski resorts of Zermatt, Verbier and Crans Montana provide skiing at altitudes up to 3,800 metres, ensuring great conditions throughout the season.

In summer, fantastic hiking opportunities are available across the region, along with mountain biking, white water rafting, ‘monster scooter’, golf and many other outdoor adventures.

If you prefer a more relaxed holiday, then Valais also provides many cultural excursions including the medieval town of Sion. It is also one of Switzerland's main wine growing regions with many opportunities for tours of the local vineyards.

The region is also lucky enough to boast a number of natural thermal spas where you can relax in style and soak up the mineral rich waters. Situated in the heart of the Valais region, the mountain resort of Leukerbad is the largest of these thermal resorts, offering a variety of indoor and outdoor pools and an array of spa treatments.

Leukerbad

Leukerbad is a thermal spa town situated in the heart of the Alps, at a height of 1400m. Well known for its skiing, hiking and thermal springs, Leukerbad is a town that provides a fantastic base for a holiday all year round.

The main ski area is accessed via a cable car just five minutes’ walk from the apartment. This provides access to 80km of ski runs at a height of up to 2,800 metres. Skiing is available for all abilities from beginner to expert and those that enjoy cross-country skiing are well catered for with a variety of trails. All this with amazing views across the southern Alps, that are quite literally breathtaking. There is also a well equiped, large and safe nursery area at lower altitude and a local ski school.

Hiking in the summer is available on over 200km of trails in the valley, along with many routes that link to neighbouring valleys, over the Gemmi Pass. Numerous via-ferrata routes provide the more adventurous with access to the Daubenhorn, and glacier hiking can be arranged on the Wildstrubel. The town also boats a modern sports centre where you can enjoy tennis, squash, badminton, table tennis, ice-skating and mini-golf.

Leukerbad is also home to the largest thermal spa resort in the Alps where guests can relax in the natural hot springs. Around four million litres of thermal spring water gush out of the rock every day, flowing into whirlpool baths, swimming pools and steam baths all designed to provide a wonderful relaxing finish to any day in the mountains.

There are numerous restaurants in town serving typical Swiss favourites, many of which welcome families. Next to the public baths, a large supermarket will provide you with all your grocery needs and has underground parking facilities. The town’s website and Les Naturelles concierge can provide further information of local concerts, markets, guided walks and exercise classes. For those wishing to learn more about the origins of the thermal springs, the signposted canyon walk offers an interesting insight.
