The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Bansko is the best ski resort in Bulgaria with a new gondola and lift system and over 75k's of superb slopes. The beautiful old town has a year round population of around 10,000 people; this grows substantially in the ski season. Bansko has 100's of restaurants and bars so you will be spoilt for choice.

The location of our apartment is its best feature. There are only around 15 to 20 hotels that can class themselves as being very close to the gondola. The Emerald is just 100m so you can put your boots on in the hotel and walk to the gondola.

The main après ski bars are also located near to the gondola so you have all this with in a 2 minute walk. The old town is about a 10 minute walk where you will find lots of traditional Bulgarian Mehena's serving traditional Bulgarian food which is a must when staying in Bansko.

Bansko is a UNESCO protected world heritage site being part of the Pirin National Park. The skiing is excellent with 75km of pistes between 1,000 and 2,700 metres catering for beginners to experienced skiers and boarders.

Bansko

Skiing

Bansko Town is around 930m above sea level. The new gondola lift which is 100m from the apartment, built in 2003, takes you directly up the mountain to Bunderishka Polyana, at 1630m above sea level. Altogether Bansko boasts 75km of ski slopes in winter, for all ages and abilities, mostly between altitudes of 1800m and 2600m. The ski season normally lasts from mid-December until mid-April. 130 million euro was spent on the ski-lift system, which continues to be developed. Queues are relatively rare and the slopes are surprisingly uncrowded.

The apartment is 2 minutes walk (100m) from the main gondola lift.

Ski Runs

Beginners - 35%; Intermediate - 40%; Advanced - 25%. 50 snow cannons covering over 50% of ski runs. Enjoy a unique 16 kilometer uninterrupted ski run, starting from Todorka Peak (2600 m) at the highest point of the ski center, all the way to base station of the Gondola lift at the outskirts of town. The last 7km of the slope are floodlit, and the entire facility is equipped with artificial snow machines to ensure a great skiing experience even in warmer conditions. Total length of marked ski runs, inc. ski roads is 75km. A modern network of lifts inc; 8-man gondola cable car by Doppelmayr, five 4-seat lifts of the latest Doppelmayr models, one 3-seat lift by Poma, 6 drags and 10 baby drags.

Summer Activities

Choose from hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and excursions in summer. The Bansko Jazz Festival takes place in August with live music across different venues in the town.

Bansko train station is served by a scenic narrow-gauge mountain railway, which operates all year round and stops at all the villages between Septemvri and Dobrinishte. It is possible to take a local excursion or even to go all the way to or from Sofia (by changing at Septemvri). Fares are very cheap (about £4 to/from Sofia) but the total journey time would be about 7 hours, much longer than that by car or coach. The village of Banya, located only 5 km from Bansko, is renowned for its 27 thermal mineral springs.

The town of Razlog is also a few minutes' drive from Bansko, but has a completely different atmosphere. If you wish to travel further afield, by hiring a car or chartering a taxi, Melnik is renowned for its wine. Greece lies a little to the south of Bansko and the Former Yugoslav Republic (FYR) of Macedonia a little to the west.

Eating Out

English is widely spoken and included on many restaurant menus in Bansko. A basic lunch for two can be had for around £13, including a bottle of local wine. Wine has been made for thousands of years in Bulgaria and some it is very good indeed, as is the local lager. Local fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and herbal teas are also of excellent quality. Bansko has a wide choice of restaurants and bars from modern to traditional Bulgarian restaurants.

Golf

The new Pirin Golf and Country Club is on the outskirts of Bansko within a 10 min drive of the apartment.
