The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Situated in the heart of the wine growing region of the Languedoc, Trebes is built on the famous and historic Canal de Midi. It is a popular stopping off point for canal boats. The village is a bustling place in Summer, with locals and visitors mingling in the shops and cafés. Most activity in Trebes takes place along the marina on the canal bank where the canal boats pull in. Here you will find restaurants, a bar, and all the amenities you need for your stay. Always a lively place at lunch time and in the evenings as the canal boats come and go. Away from the canal, the quieter old streets are typical of a French country village. Don’t miss the old church of Saint-Etienne with its unusual carvings. The tourist office organises walking tours of the village and the church. From Trebes you can cycle along the picturesque and safe canal paths in either direction.

Carcassonne

The spectacular, beautifully restored medieval streets and ramparts of the Cité are a huge attraction for this part of France. Lively both day and night during the Summer and holidays, the Cité is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is packed with interesting cafés, restaurants and shops. Adults and children alike can enjoy hours of variety here.

In July, on or near Bastille Day, the Cité hosts the biggest firework display in France. Shows, exhibitions and concerts take place throughout the year. In Summer there are concerts and recitals as part of an international music festival. For children, there are regular costumed displays of jousting held in the arena on the ramparts. Shops and cafés are family friendly. Crepes and ice cream stalls provide an alternative for a quick snack as you wander through the streets and squares.

Don’t miss the “real” Carcassonne, (Carcassonne Bastide). A lovely town, with a lively centre, especially on Saturday mornings when a market takes place in Place Carnot. Here you will also find several cafés, bars and shops, along the narrow pedestrianised streets.

Lac Cavayere (10mins drive from Trebes) is known locally as “Carcassonne Plage.” It is a large lake surrounded by woodland, with pathways, picnic areas, beach and water and outdoor activities. ideal for children and teens. Also nearby is Le Parc Australien, which has Australian animals, exhibits and crafts. Great for kids.

For golfers, an excellent 18 hole, top quality golf course is only 10 minutes drive away. The club also has an excellent restaurant, with a great view over the First Tee….famous for it’d steep uphill drive.

The beaches of the Narbonne area, and the ski slopes of the Pyrenees are all within a couple of hours drive.
