The Northumberland region

Northumberland has a wealth of Roman history with it's iconic Hadrian's Wall running from Wallsend in the east through the border into Cumbria and ending on the Solway coast.

The area has ancient forts and museums detailing the time the Romans populated the area bringing their knowledge of building and construction to the wild borderlands of England. The area is vast and unspoilt with the Northern Pennines to the west and the wild Cheviots to the North forming the border into Scotland.

The river Tyne lies to the south and to the east we have the beautiful coastline of Northumbelrand with it's many castles such as Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Warkworth. There are wonderful places to visit Alnwick Garden and Castle steeped in history and home to the Dukes of Northumberland. If you enjoy walking you will be spoilt for choice through rolling farmland, pine forests or wild heather moors.

Northumberland is an excellent choice for cycling. We have an incredible network of bridleways and cyclepaths and Kielder has some fantastic mountain bike routes. National Trust properties such as Cragside, Wallington and Gibside are all within an easy drive of Chapel House. Roads in Northumberland are generally much quieter than those further south and you will find it a pleasure to drive through some of the most breathtaking scenery in England.

Whitley Chapel

Hexham is a lovely market town with an Abbey dating from 620 a.d. It has an award winning farmers market which is held on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month and a rich supply of local produce is available for sale. Nearby we have the lovely village of Corbridge with it's many individual shops offering a wide range of goods for you to browse.

The area around Hexham is rich farmland with in the distant high heather moors of the North Pennines. The river South Tyne is the best stocked Salmon fishing river in England. Kielder Water to the north offers superb mountain biking routes and wonderful sailing facilties as well as beautiful walking country.
