Lisbon, the city of seven hills, has been the capital of Portugal since the 12th century. It has a long history that can be experienced in the old neighbourhoods, which may be visited by foot or tram. The Atlantic climate offers wonderful conditions to travel all year round.
Lisbon bears the mark of an incredible heritage with laid-back pride. The city also presents an intriguing variety of faces to those who negotiate its switchback streets. In the oldest neighborhoods, stepped alleys are lined with pastel-color houses and crossed by laundry hung out to dry; here and there miradouros (vantage points) afford spectacular river or city views. In the centre, black-and-white mosaic cobblestone side-walks border wide boulevards, and blue-and-white azulejos (painted and glazed ceramic tiles) adorn churches, restaurants, and fountains.
Apartment 49 is at Graça like other apartments. This neighbourhood is located on the highest hill of Lisbon and has the most amazing views over the city.
The apartment is very close to the square where Lisbon's most famous market - Feira da Ladra - is held in the early afternoon every Tuesday and Saturday. Behind the various bric-a-bracs, you can also uncover second-hand clothes, books, disks, and, if you dig deep enough, some genuinely valuable antiques.
You can easily reach the city centre by foot (about 20 minutes) or by taking the famous tram number 28 (10 minutes), a scenic route crossing most of the touristy neighbourhoods of the city centre. A definite must for any visitor to Lisbon!
You can also walk to Alfama (5 minutes) and, from there, to the castle (S. Jorge) and Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto.
From apartment you can also go to some most spectacular "Miradouros" (vantage points) with stunning views over the castle S Jorge, the river Tejo and the city roofs. (miradors of Graça with an open-air café and Senhora do Monte 600m further on and also mirador of Senhora do Monte). The views are even more spectacular at sunset.
The nearest airport is Lisbon International Airport at 12 kilometres; the nearest railway station is International Station of Santa Apolónia at 1 kilometer.
Come and see for yourself!
