Northern Cyprus is a perhaps the last unspoilt corner of the Mediterranean: the pace of life is gentle, the local Turkish Cypriot cuisine is excellent, the people charming and the prices are amongst the lowest in Europe!

Ozankoy village is just below Bellapais Abbey and 5 minutes by car to Kyrenia and as it is on one side of the hills between Kyrenia and Bellapais it is spared the excessive mid-day heat in the summer. One can see up to the mountains or down to the sea!

This original village home is nestled amongst the hospitable local people whom we ourselves have built strong friendships with over the years staying in them. They are not modern villas in complexes and therefore the 2ft thick walls keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. You will find yourself immersed in the delights of local village life with all its charm and tranquility. You will probably even get an invite to a local wedding when you are there. The village of Ozankoy provides a real Cypriot experience of donkeys, cockerels, scents of jasmine and Cypress trees, and bread being cooked in the outdoor local village restaurants!

In our village one can purchase most daily essentials in the several small shops, coffee shops and local butcher. The main large stores and markets are in Kyrenia.

Without a doubt Northern Cyprus has one of the lowest costs of living in Europe. Both food and drinks and half the price of that in the UK. So one soon makes up the cost of the flight tickets and has a holiday in the sun at a very reasonable cost – the longer one stays the more one benefits from the low cost of living. A good shish kebab dinner with fruit, coffee and a beer is around £10. A good standard mixed grill three course meal with wine can be as little as £18 a head!

There is full use of the private pool at one of our other cottages, 5 minutes walk away.

The Kyrenia region

Kyrenia is the most beautiful town in Cyprus and is located on its northern coast. It has always been the most attractive tourist location on the island and it is also the home to a thousand permanent UK residents. Kyrenia (or Girne in Turkish) with a population of about 20,000 is a historic town built around a castle and delightful harbour. The old harbour is one of the oldest harbours in the world still operating. Northern Cyprus has managed to avoid mass tourism and presents itself as an oasis of rich Turkish Cypriot culture steeped in history.

Situated on the coast there are miles of golden beaches to the east and west of Kyrenia. Centrally located it is convenient to the other three main towns in Northern Cyprus - Nicosia, Famagusta and Morphou. The Roman City of Salamis, mentioned in the Bible, should also be visited. Another must see is the Karpaz area, otherwise known as the ‘Panhandle’. The Karpaz is very tranquil and has the most beautiful and un-spoilt beaches on the island.

The weather in Cyprus is excellent - the sun blazes away from March through to the end of November and even in December, January and February there is sunshine most days.

In winter the temperature is about 17C max and 5C min with no frost - just like a mild British summer.

In summer the temperature has a max of 38C and min of 20C.

From May to the end of October there is little, if any, rain. Cypriots need rain and pray for some between November and March - only a little comes! In mid-November the daily temperature is still 18C with the sun shining each day.

In the UK it is already freezing!

In our village there are 2 great local restaurants within 5 minutes walking distance from the cottage:

Rose Garden (Cypriot cuisine) and Erol’s Restaurant (Cypriot cuisine). These are excellent simple restaurants, serving in their respective courtyards in the summer amongst the rich fauna scents that are found in the village. These restaurants are perfect for families with children, especially as they are easy walking distance from any of the homes.

The off course there are the many restaurants in Kyrenia and around the harbour boasting a great mix of traditional Turkish cuisine and top table French dishes. Tha harbour is a delight in the evenings.

There is a wide range of small and large golden sandy beaches all along the northern coast by our village and Kyrenia depending on your preference. Water sports (The Banana, Para sending, wind-surfing) are organized at Deniz Kizi Beach (to the West of Kyrenia), Escape Beach and Acapulco Beach. Deniz Kizi also has a great large pool. Kyrenia Club (also known as Oscar Hotel) which is 5 minutes by car from the cottages has the largest fresh water swimming pool in Northern Cyprus.

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church has services every Thursday and Sunday mornings at 10.00am. It is a great opportunity to meet the local British residents as well as other holiday makers. Coffee and cold drinks are served after the services in the church gardens, a stones throw from the harbour.

There are many boat trips organised from the harbour. Places of interest include Bellapais Abbey where Lawewnce Durrell was inspired to write 'Bitter Lemons' (5 mins from cottage), St. Hilarion Castle and off course the old castle at the end of the harbour. The Trosos mountains offer great walks amongst the pine trees.

The English language newspaper – Cyprus Today – which is published bi-weekly - is a good source for news about local events and restaurants.
