The Marche region lies on the eastern side of central Italy and is bordered by Umbria, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and Abruzzo. It has 180kms of coastline to the east and the Apennine mountains to the west of the region.
It remains a relatively undiscovered region and thankfully it is not inundated with tourists in the summer months. Some of the region’s best beaches can be found within a 40 minute drive of Casa Elsa, including Sirolo, Senigallia, Numana and Porto Recanati, all have been awarded blue flag status. The impressive Monte Conero peninsula, just south of Ancona, is a huge limestone mountain that rises majestically out of the sea and shelters a few secluded beaches; the walk down to these beaches is well worth the effort.
Inland the undulating hills are dotted with magical hilltop villages where you can admire the medieval architecture or simply sit outside a café, sipping a chilled glass of the local Verdicchio wine and watching the world go by.
A trip to Urbino, a pinnacle of Renaissance architecture and the birthplace of Raphael, is a must. The magnificent Palazzo Ducale houses works by Raphael, Giovanni Bellini and Piero della Francesca. Other towns rich in art and culture include Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Fabriano and Camerino.
For opera lovers, the wonderful neo-classical open-air amphitheatre in Macerata hosts an internationally renowned opera festival every July and August.
The spectacular Frasassi limestone caves at Genga (40 kms), the largest natural caves in Europe, are an experience not to be missed.
For the more energetic, the region is ideal for walking, cycling, mountain biking, watersports and horse riding. The beautiful Sibillini National Park has peaks of over 2000 meters and is well worth a visit. For golf lovers there is an 18 hole championship golf course at Monte Conero, just south of Ancona (43 kms).
There are many picturesque hilltop towns and villages to explore within a 20 minute drive of Casa Elsa.
The nearby medieval towns of Cingoli and Jesi, both offer a variety of shops, restaurants, pizzerias and bars.
Throughout the summer months food and musical festivals are held in the local villages giving you the chance to meet the locals, and see how they celebrate their local produce. In late summer wine festivals are held to celebrate the harvesting of the grapes. The region produces a number of notable wines including Verdicchio, Rosse Conero, and Lacrima Morro D'Alba.
For families with children, there are 2 large waterparks, one 5 kms away and the other 17 kms.
The Adriatic beaches are just 40 minutes away.
