The Marche/Abruzzo region

The position of this area means that the climate is particular from other parts of the Marche - hot summers, long Indian summers, usually gentle winters and warm springs. Restaurants both inland and on the coast offer very good local food and wine at very reasonable prices. Many historical venues await you: the area abounds with medieval towns and villages with their secret alley ways and majestic squares. Remains of Thomas O'Becket were taken to Montedinove during Henry VIII's reign.

The Templar knights are celebrated every year at Castignano, one of their main settlements in the Marche. Crusaders and pilgrims left for Jerusalem from Ancona. Recanate was the home of Giacomo Leopardi one of Italy's greatest poets. Fermo, a university town, each year celebrates the "Cavalcata dell'Assunta", similar to the Palio at Siena, on the15th August. Smaller festivals are held regularly throughout the summer months in the many towns and surrounding villages. For day trips the Gran Sasso, Valnerina and the Sibillini mountains await you inland, while the superb Conero coastline known as the "Riviera Jewel" and the beautiful Sirolo beach, near to Ancona can be reached from Porchia in just over an hour.

Valnerina, in Umbria, offers you the chance to visit Norcia famous for its truffles and prosciutto (ham). Keen shoppers will enjoy the outlet areas in Civitavecchia Marche where there is an abundance of labelled clothes, shoes and accessories. Ascoli Piceno, Macerata, Sarnano, Ancona are just a few of the many towns you can visit. You will find more detailed information regarding the region at the house.

Montalto delle Marche

Each month various publications are available for you to buy at the newspaper stands detailing the exhibitions, music festivals, popular festivals and the many events held throughout the calender year.

During mid-august the Templar Festival in Castignano is a must with its fire-eaters and crusaders while for the smaller children Montalto della Marche organise "The Night of Witches and Elves" where the magic and spells of fairy tales are re-enacted.

At the house you will find information regarding the various villages and summer events.
