South west Florida is the ideal place to enjoy leisure and pleasure in the great outdoors, it being one of the warmest areas of the United States. In the height of summer ocean breezes keep things cool while visitors enjoy swimming, sunning, shelling or playing a round of golf. Nature lovers are drawn here because of the area's close proximity to the Everglades National Park, the Big Cypress Swamp and numerous other wetland reserves, wildlife refuges and habitats.
Then, of course, there are the miles of beautiful beaches, washed by the warm Gulf waters and covered in a fascinating array of seashells. Winter is 'in season' in this part of the world, which stays warm while the more northerly states freeze. Little wonder that the Gulf Coast has become a magnet for visitors whom locals term 'snowbirds' migrating from the north to winter here.
The Gulf Coast is also a great base to enjoy the theme parks at Orlando, and is particularly close to Busch Gardens. Simply take the I-275 and them I-4 towards Orlando and you will be there in less than 90 minutes.
Clearwater Beach is home of award-winning pristine white sand beaches, clear gulf waters, warm sunshine, and plenty of hospitality. It has a full marina on the Intracoastal Waterway side and is linked on the south by a short bridge to another island called Sand Key, where on the near end is found a large public beach park, directly on the Gulf.
Sand Key Park, which closes at dark, has picnic and fishing accommodations, a nature trail, beach concession stands, and very spacious parking lots.
Clearwater Beach is approximately 20 miles from Tampa International Airport, 25 from Downtown Tampa and offers such activities as parasailing, jet ski rentals, boat tours (with a common sighting of dolphins in the Gulf waters), miniature golf, fishing charters, and "pirate ship" cruises.
Pier 60, named for Florida State Road 60 which terminates here, is a central spot for beachgoers and has a playground, a snack bar with attached souvenir shop, and a long fishing pier. It's the site of a daily event called Sunsets At Pier 60, which includes street performers and musical acts. On the pier itself is a nightly display of goods sold by local artisans such as jewelry, candles, and other gift items.
The Jolley Trolley bus provides transportation up and down the beach. Mandalay Avenue is the main drag on the north end of the beach with Gulfview Blvd. being so on the south. Both areas feature myriad activities and establishments.
Meet Winter, the world’s most famous dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. See the Champion Philadelphia Phillies during Spring training at beautiful Bright House Field. Enjoy the nightly "Sunsets at Pier 60" Festival where sunsets, music, magic and fun create lasting memories.
Come to watch the National Superboat Championships or the Ironman. And don’t miss the Internationally recognized Clearwater Jazz Festival! There is always something special going on at Clearwater Beach.
