The town started as small dwellings centred around the castle which was built by Meredith ap Rhys Gryg in 1240 but rebuilt again later. The ruins overlook the river on 3 sides with a number of small footpaths to navigate. The town has a number of small cafe's, artisan shops, a park and market and locally, there a plenty of sites to visit such as the Cilgerran wildlife centre, Cenarth Salmon falls and Pentre Ifan standing stones.
