Carcassonne is the cultural and historic capital of the Aude region sitting upon the Aude river and crossed by the breathtakingly beautiful Canal Du Midi.

Ideal for your weekly shop or even closer to the apartments are local amenities, including an excellent boulangerie selling fabulous bread, croissants and patisseries, a fishmonger, wine cave, small supermarket and a good pizza restaurant.
The new town is a compact multi-ethnic place, built on a grid system, which makes sightseeing easy. At the hub of this grid is the elegant Place Carnot with its many bars and cafes -ideal to people watch! There is a typical French market every Saturday morning. Well worth a visit just for the atmosphere alone! There's also a daily fruit and veg market in the Place de Carnot - closed Sunday. Within the grid is the Canal Du Midi basin, railway station and the Pont Vieux (old bridge with breath-taking views of La Cîte) taking you across the Aude back to La Cîte.
A ten-minute drive will take you to the beautiful Lac de La Cavayere or Carcassonne Plage, for sun bathing, swimming, boating and even extreme tree pursuits.
Golf is also on offer at Carcassonne and Castelnaudary.
The region around Carcasonne is world famous for the Cathar history and for the many castles that were built from the 12th to the 14th century including the enchanting Lastours and Montsegur. Within an hour you can be walking or skiing in the mountains of the Arriege and within 2 hours the Pyrenees. There are also many spectacular show caves to explore within easy access of Carcassonne. The number of places to visit in a week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone!
