Cape Verde is made up of an archipelago of ten main islands including Sal, due south of the Canaries and hundreds of miles west of the African continent. Colonised by Portugal since the 15th century it is now independent but still has close links with Portugal and the EU. Its currency the Escudo is pegged to the Euro and Portuguese as well as Crioulo (a mix of Portuguese and African) are its official languages, although English and European languages are increasingly spoken.
It is now recognised as one of the new top destinations around the world. And it’s not surprising given the relaxed atmosphere, stunning beaches and truly year-round sun (tempered by a cooling trade wind breeze). It’s the Caribbean without the expense or jet-lag, the Canaries without the concrete or the crowds, the tropics but close to home.
And close to your apartment you have the best that Sal has to offer. Santa Maria, with its eclectic mix of old and new, its cobbled streets and pastel-coloured buildings, provides a variety of restaurants where you can sample new dishes (with Portuguese, Creole and Brazilian influences) and old favourites (English and Italian) and of course fantastic, fresh seafood.
Or check out the shops and stalls where you can find colourful clothes, hand-made jewellery, paintings and ornaments. (There are two banks where you can exchange money and ATMs where you can withdraw the local currency.)
Try a restaurant or cafe for a cool beer or a coffee while watching the world go by or perhaps a stroll down to the pier to see the fishermen bring in their catches? You could buy some at a bargain price to cook that evening. Or perhaps a visit to the nearby turtle sanctuary.
But when all that relaxing gets just too exhausting you can always learn to surf where the world surfing championships are held (and the surf school here is run by a world champion), go scuba diving or snorkelling in some of the best diving waters in the world, learn to kite surf, or go fishing, swimming or quad biking. There are full or half day yacht excursions, there are also power boat trips or you can take a shorter trip in a glass bottomed boat that looks just like a yellow submarine!
You can take land excursions around the island by Jeep or minibus – the jeep trips go cross-country over Sal’s ‘lunar landscape’ and are particularly good fun. These trips will take you to places like the colourful fishing port of Palmeira, to Buracona’s famous ‘Blue Eye’ lagoon, to the island capital of Espargos and the impressive salt lakes of Pedra de Lume set in a huge extinct volcanic crater where you can experience ‘weightless’ floating in the shallow lakes.
Of course you can also hire a car or 4X4 and explore the island independently (and ther's plenty of local taxis). And if you want to see more of Cape Verde there are short, island-hopping flights to Santiago or to the dramatic scenery of the island of Fogo
