North Norfolk's countryside and coast has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and whether it's the superb bird watching in the thousands of acres of marsh and wetland, walking along the enviable promenades and cliff tops, cycling or horse riding around the unspoilt natural terrain, or relaxing on the miles of sandy beaches - the area really does offer something for everyone, all year round. The country towns, with their attractive buildings, spectacular churches, specialist shops and weekly markets are a must - as are the plethora of stately homes that punctuate the local landscape. The historical, bustling centres of Norwich and Kings Lynn are within a 40min drive. And for traditional seaside ambience, you can't beat a leisurely jaunt on the steam train from Holt, which navigates along the "Poppy line" to Sheringham, a boat trip from Blakeney to see the seals, or crabbing with the kids at Wells-next-the-sea, which is just a 10min drive way.
Fakenham is a thriving market town which dates back to 1250, with the focus still the market square and war memorial in the centre of town. As well as its ancient past, echoed in some of the 18th and 19th century buildings, the town offers every modern convenience: cinema, 2 major supermarkets, cafés and delis serving local delicacies and seafood, ten pin bowling centre, nine hole golf course, a driving range, a sports centre with tennis and squash courts, indoor childrens play centre, etc etc. The town boasts one of the foremost racecourses in the country, with Fakenham race days the highlight of a vibrant equestrian calendar. Always bustling, the weekly farmers and bric a brac market takes place on a Thursday in the town centre. Sculthorpe Owl and Nature reserve and Pensthorpe Wildlike Park, famous for BBC's SpringWatch programme, flank the town on either side. And nearby, the world-famous Sandringham Estate - rural idyll for the Queen and Royal Family - and the Thursford Collection, both offer a tempting day out for all.
