The Lake Como region

Lake Como

Has an area of 146 kmĀ², making it the third largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. At over 400 m (1320 ft) deep it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the bottom of the lake is more than 200 metres (656 ft) below sea-level.

The city of Como is about an hour away by car and well worth a visit.

The city contains numerous works of art, churches, gardens, museums, theatres, parks and palaces: the Duomo (seat of Diocese of Como), the Basilica of Sant'Abbondio.

The city was world famous for its silk manufacturers but in recent years cheap competition from China has significantly reduced profit margins and many small and mid-sized manufacturers have gone out of business.

Bellagio, a medieval town traces the shore of the lake and has a medieval walled entrance into the central square from which narrow lanes lined with colourful boutiques and restaurants.

Most of the villages are accessible by boat. You can settle onto a steamer equipped with bar and restaurant and from your armchair lazily enjoy the constantly changing but always intriguing shoreline as the boat manoeuvres in and out of the colourful little harbours, past elegant private villas. It is great fun to hop aboard one of the ferries and get off at one of the towns for lunch. There are also some swift hydrofoils that will whisk you about the lake and car ferries that transverse the lake, making it convenient to travel from one side to the other without going all around the lake. Another bonus of Lake Como is that it has many exceptional villas and palaces to visit, many accessible by ferry. Such as Villa Olmo, Villa Serbelloni, Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta.

Currently, many celebrities have or had homes on the shores of Lake Como, such as Matthew Bellamy, Madonna, George Clooney, Gianni Versace, Ronaldinho, Sylvester Stallone, Richard Branson, and Ben Spies. Lake Como is widely regarded as being one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy.

The apartment is set in the village of Trezzone, where from our balcony you have a panoramic view of the lake and mountains. A short drive further up the mountain you have an even more amazing view.

There are lots of villas, gardens and museums to visit such as the Villa Carlotta. In the surrounding towns you will find; horse riding, fishing, mountain biking and if golf is your thing there is an excellent golf course not to far away where, if your lucky, you could bump into George Clooney. You can hire a speed boat, go wind surfing or take a leisurely boat trip around the lake or if time is short, take the hydrofoil. There are lots of local markets to visit. Shops and supermarkets are plentiful.

While eating out on the balcony at VISTA DEL LAGO is wonderful, there are also many good restaurants and bars near by and along the lake front where fresh local fish is a must.

There is a large hypermarket just a short drive around to the other side of the lake, where you will also find some local shops.
