Lake Maggiore nestles amongst the snow capped mountains of the Alps. It is the most westerly, and second largest of the italian lakes and is an attraction for tourists who are enticed by its climate being mild in both summer and winter, guaranteeing extended holidays and lovely landscapes.
The lake offers a relaxing environment, cultural attractions or sporting activities. There are many history packed locations such as the Borromeo Islands, wiht their splendid Italian style gardens, Angera Castle that dates back too the XIIth century, the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, built in the XXII century, stunning villas, and the gardens of Villa Taranto in Verbania are but a short distance.
At the harbor catch the ferry across the lake to the amazing lakeside village of Cannobio with it's cobbled streets and ally ways steeped in history, fine shops and restaurants, cafes and bars (the ice cream is scrumptious!). On Sunday there is a bustling Market worth visiting. The ferry also takes you to the Borromeo Islands and Stresa with its promenade of grand 19th century hotels, fine restaurants and wine bars, or Locamo in Switzerland.
In the nearby Swiss Tessin region, there are beautiful places to spend a day out with the children (Monte Tamaro with its cable car and several adventure parks). For a great day out take the Lago Maggiore Express train and travel through the Swiss Alps to Stresa and then return by the ferry on the lake.
Valverzasca has fantastic bathing spots in the fresh water of its river. In winter, skiers can enjoy the small ski-lift to Alpe Forcora only 30 minutes away, or travel to the well known Swiss Ski resort of San Bernardiono, Airolo and Andermatt in just over an hour. Golf lovers will find 6 prestigious courses within a range of 40 km.
Maccagno is a most charming unspoilt harbor town on the North East side of Lake Maggiore, being less touristy than the West. Enjoy walking alongside the lake, take a detour into the old town near the harbor and explore the little winding streets, lower Maccagno has retained its Medieval aspect, with houses nestling close to each other. It has an ancient signalling tower, the Torre Imperiale. Or simply go to one of the cafe's for coffee, cakes and of course ice cream.
The lake is perfectly safe to swim in, and being glacial it is very clean. Children will have great fun splashing about, looking for fish and exploring, it is pebbly so swim shoes would be advisable. There are a wide range of places to eat out, from family friendly pizzerias to fine Italian restaurants.

The lake ferry enables visitors to easily reach the towns around the lake, such as Luino which has the biggest weekly market in Europe (Wednesdays) and is great for local shopping. Beautiful Cannobio for its fine restaurants and shops, the Swiss town of Locamo and the gardens on the Borromeo Islands.
