The Perigord Noir is an area of outstanding beauty; and the valley of the Dordogne is famous for it's abundance of beautiful villages (Beaux Villages) full of charm and history, many of which date back to mediaeval times. With breathtaking views at every turn, follow the winding course of the Dordogne river and marvel at the beauty of the many Chateaux, in this land of '1001 Chateaux', some perched high on dramatic limestone cliffs. Chateau Des Milandes, once the home of glamorous singer Josephine Baker, has a wonderful and interesting exhibition about her life and is only a short drive from the gite, as are the spectacular Chateau Beynac and Chateau Castelnaud where the children can play being Knights and princesses for a day. The village of Le Roque Gageac beside the Dordogne river is little changed in 300 years, with trips on traditional 'Gabarres' (wooden boats) along the Dordogne river , a fantastic way to see the beautiful medieval villages carved into the rock face.
The gite is situated in the heart of the Périgord Noir famous for its wonderfully preserved chateaux, medieval settlements & prehistoric caves. Visit the world famous Lascaux and Les Eyzies or the Parc Archeologique de Beynac. The Bastide towns of Domme and Monpazier are a must to visit.
View the stunning landscape from a hot air balloon, enjoy riverside beaches and beautiful gardens at Les Jardins de Marquessac. The list really could go on and on ....
We are approximately 10 mins drive from the Dordogne river, easy for canoe hire and the local mediaeval town of St Cyprien with its shops, bars, bakerys and supermarkets. Sundays in St.Cyprien sees a vibrant market selling local produce and artisan goods, a great way to pass a sunday morning enjoying a drink at one of the street side cafes soaking up the local colour.
For the energetic there is an amazing network of footpaths for both walkers and cyclists, clearly marked for varying degrees of difficulty and length.
Golf lovers should be kept happy with the popular Lolivarie 18-hole golf course only 5 km away or The Forge 9-hole golf course 6km away near Siorac-en-Perigord.
During the summer months many towns and villages host a 'Marche Gourmand' a wonderful evening of outdoor eating and drinking local foods and wines. Enjoy meeting and eating together, sitting at long tables under sunny skies, listening to local musicians and enjoying the food of the region. You could almost go to a different one every night of the week !
