Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands and lies just 70 miles off the coast of Saharan Africa. Creating an enviable year round climate that is characterized by extremely low rainfall and temperatures that rarely fall below 20c - even in the winter months. This makes it a popular destination all year long, especially coupled with the attraction of Lanzarote's ninety plus beaches, the majority which boast fine golden sand and its' exciting volcanic landscapes. These were created after the longest volcanic eruption - in 1730 - which covered about a quarter of the island with lava, giving the island today an almost prehistorical feel where that lava now makes a moon-acape-like landscape.
Not only does Lanzarote offer beaches and this strange lunar terrain but in 1994 UNESCO proclaimed it a protected biosphere - the first island to gain this recognition. The Lanzarotean artist and architect, Cesar Manriquez, helped immensely towards the biosphere award by fighting against unsightly and non-environmental developments - he has also left some amazing architectural tourist attractions which are also of great interest for visitors. Outdoor life is well represented with surfing, diving, fishing and golfing all available. The island is a manageable size without huge traffic issues so makes it very accessible for visiting by car, even on short day trips.
Lanzarote has its' own culture as well as representations from Spain - both of which can be enjoyed in the cultural events and carnivals each month, and of course in the food and drink.
Puerto Calero is a stylish marina created in 1989 and lying just five minutes from the bustle of Puerto del Carmen. It has become established as the island's fourth resort with many high-end shopping offerings plus excellent restaurants and bars. Many of Lanzarote's exciting sea excursions leave from Puerto Calero (deep sea fishing, catamaran tours and the submarine safaris.) Puerto Calero is withn easy reach of Puerto del Carmen using the water-taxi from the marina and all other resorts can be quickly joined via car,, taxi or local bus service.
