The villa is located in the Western Algarve, which is more relaxed, quieter, less commercial than the high rise resorts to the east.
The spectacular coastline has fabulous sandy beaches and coves protected by huge yellow cliffs and rocky outcrops, and crystal clear turquoise sea. Many of the beaches have a little beach bar and restaurant, some located almost on the beach, serving the freshest of fish and local produce simply cooked and tasting divine!
The West coast, less than 20 minutes drive from Luz takes you to the Atlantic seaboard which has an even more dramatic rugged coastline, and large rollers which are terrific for surfing. The small coastal road stretching northwards along the west coast is unforgettable with occasional little fishing villages, sometimes appearing to be precariously perched in clefts in the rocks overlooking the little fishing harbours.
Inland the Monchique Mountains give protection to the Algarve from the colder north winds and ensure its mild year round temperatures. The mountains are clothed with pine and eucalyptus forests and cork oaks and in the villages and the town of Monchique you will find local handcrafts and delicacies, including chicken piri piri, wild boar and the local spring water for which the region is famous since Roman times. There are splendid views from the mountains of the entire coastline to the west and south and the air is often filled with the scent of wild herbs and shrubs and almond blossom.
To the north of Lagos is the old Moorish capital of Silves, which is dominated by its ancient castellated castle, the largest intact castle in Portugal and from where there are fantastic views of the whole area.
The villa is located in Praia da Luz, a low rise, low key small family resort 8 km west of Lagos, the regional capital.
Luz has a fabulous sandy beach with a blue flag for water quality and facilities. The village has lots of excellent restaurants serving fresh seafood and local produce and wines as well as banks, post office, shops, supermarkets, pharmacy, dentist and Luz Doc, an international medical facility.
There are two water sports centres at the beach offering a wide variety of sports and also tuition, and boat trips can be arranged to visit coastal caves/grottoes and for dolphin watching and fishing. Tennis, horse-riding, cycling, quad biking are amongst the many sporting activities available locally and the coastal pathways are terrific for walkers who can enjoy wonderful sea vistas and nature walks.
Visitors are welcome to the excellent golf courses in the area, the nearest one being Boa Vista Golf, about 4 km. Espiche Golf is about 8 km and Parque da Floresta is about 15 minutes drive west of Luz, while just east of Lagos is Palmares Links and Penina Golf.
The historic town of Lagos has a myriad of narrow streets within its still-intact ancient walls. The cobbled streets are lined with shops, restaurants and café bars where you can quench your thirst and watch the world go by. Most of the Voyages of Discovery of the New World left from Lagos and returned with exotic gems and spices bringing prestige and prosperity to the area. A replica of Columbus's ship is moored at the waterfront, and more information can be found in the local museum. The town now has a large modern marina, close to which is Meia Praia beach, a long stretch of sandy beach stretching eastwards for about 4 km. There are several iconic beaches on the western side of the town, including the much-photographed Praia da Dona Ana, and Ponte da Piedade a fantastic rocky promontory from where you can marvel at the mesmerising sunsets.
Just north of Lagos is the ever-popular Lagos Zoo, and there are several water parks and ZooMarine about half an hour's drive to the east for a family fun outing.
