The Costa de la Luz is one of the last unspoilt stretches of coastline in Spain. The Cádiz stretch runs from the tourist hotspot of Tarifa in the south to beautiful Cádiz in the north, believed to be the world's oldest city.
Within the province also lies the fascinating town of Jerez and a tour of the famous sherry bodegas is a must. The picturesque white towns of Vejer, Zahara, Medina Sidonia and Alcalar are all within an hour's drive.
The Natural Park of Alcornocales starts just behind Facinas and continues all the way to Ronda.
Facinas is a wonderfully peaceful village and a perfect base from which to explore the area. The village itself boasts some of the best restaurants in the area and at weekends they are busy with visitors from the neighbouring towns. There are fantastic opportunities for walking and cycling in the hills behind Facinas, with prehistoric cave paintings, forests and waterfalls to be discovered and explored.
Whilst being a quieter alternative to the busy nightlife centre of Tarifa, Facinas is also closer to the areas's most popular beaches. Nearest is the amazing beach at Bolonia where you can wander around the impressive Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia before dining on fish straight out of the sea! A little further south is the natural paradise of Punta Paloma followed by the stunning bay of Valdevaqueros and the long kitesurf mecca of Los Lances.
The nearest main town of Tarifa has something for everyone. Wander around the labyrinthine streets of the old town and shop in the many stylish boutiques, explore the medieval castle, eat in one of the myriad tapas bars and restaurants or dance the night away. Whale watching tours into the straits of Gibraltar leave daily and of course Morocco is only 35 minutes away by ferry- lunch in Tangier is a fun way to spend a day. For those that fancy a late night out, taxis run all night to get you back to Facinas.
Head north and you soon reach the stunning hilltop Moorish town of Vejer de la Frontera which has been declared a national monument. Overlooking the Las Breñas national park, the beaches of Los Caños de Meca and El Palmar, and Cape Trafalgar, it is a fantastic place to spend a day exploring the medieval old town with its tiny cobbled streets, tapas bars, shops and historic buildings including the original castle which in parts dates back to the 10th Century.
The beaches near Facinas are all unspoilt, clean and spacious even in the middle of summer. The area is famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing and it is easy to arrange lessons if necessary. Other activities that are offered locally include horse-riding, mountain biking, rock climbing and scuba diving. The nearest golf courses are at Montenmedio or Benalup, both 45 minutes away, or heading in the other direction, the many courses of the Costa del Sol start at Alcaidesa, also 45 minutes away.
Details on all of these activities will be available in the house.
