Zanzibar – the very name summons up associations of romance and tranquillity, of wars and battles long past, of Arab dhows trading along the coast, of nights under the stars eating richly spiced food and cooling drinks. Of the souk and the coffee house, of the bustle of trade and of secret romance (thank you Rudolph Valantino!). What more should we say? Just Google ‘Stone Town’ and then decide what you want to do, and when – but take it easy, it can get hot in town.
Jambiani is a peaceful village stretching some 6 kilometres along the coast. The people are poor, but proud, being mostly reliant on fishing and tourism. You will not find the ‘Go-go’ bars and pulsating music of popular resorts here, but quiet places where you can have a drink and meet locals and tourists alike. It is a village where one does not rush and where a wrist watch is not the most necessary item, as most things happen in ‘African Variable Time’! It is a wonderful place to swim, snorkel or dive if that is your inclination. To read those books which one does not have time for at home, and to relax in the evenings under the clear starlight skies, dining at ones leisure. Indulge yourself!
