Syracuse (or Siracusa), a 2,700 years old city is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres, architecture. It was the most important city of Magna Graecia and it was home to many great Greek, including the well-known mathematician Archimedes.
A visit can be split into two easy parts: one dedicated to the archaeological site, home to a number of well-preserved Greek and Roman remains, the other to Ortygia, the Syracuse's island heart. Restaurants, trattorias and bars welcome tourist and it is especially nice to sit out on the western side in the late afternoon, warmed by the sun and with a view over the lagoon.
Noto: a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002, Noto (18km from the property) is famous for its fine buildings of the early 18th century, considered among the main masterpieces in the Sicilian baroque style. At the end of May, Noto celebrates the marvels of Spring and the coming summer with a colourful "Festa" known as the "Infiorita". The street becomes home to flower artists who create the most beautiful mosaics using petals.
Marzamemi: Just a few kilometres from our property Marzamemi is one of Sicily's prettiest seaside villages and it's is worth visiting at any time of year.
Taormina: The pearl of Mediterranean - about 2hours driving from our property - is a charming historical city with one of the world's greatest views. Visitors flock from all over the world to see its Greek-Roman theatre, to amble along its perfectly preserved Mediaeval streets, to admire its dramatic views of Mount Etna and to immerse themselves in the archetypal Mediterranean atmosphere.
And then Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano on the European continent or Modica rich of Sicilian Baroque style with magnificent churches, and also Ragusa, one of the most fascinating towns in Sicily. And much much more.
The Vendicari area is a mixture of lagoons (pantano), sand dunes, rocky coastlines, and sandy beaches. It was instituted in 1984 and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The high salinity of the ground provides an ideal habitat for Mediterranean maquis, herbs such as thyme and rosemary and other prickly flora.
Thousands of migrating birds pass a few days here on their way to or from Africa. Flamingos, herons, storks and cormorants are regulars during autumn, while in the winter, ducks, mallards, pintails and terns take over. An ornithologists' paradise, there are several hides for those who bring their binoculars.
Vendicari offers also a wonderful environment for a good seaside walk with only the sound of the waves, birds and the wind. There are three entrances to the park. Our property give access to one of this entrance.
