Tuscany is known for its beautiful landscapes, its rich artistic legacy and vast influence on high culture. Tuscany is widely regarded as the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and has been home to some of the most influential people in history, such as Petrarch, Dante, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei, Amerigo Vespucci and Puccini. Due to this, the region has several museums, most of which (such as the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace) are found in Florence, but others in towns and smaller villages. Tuscany has a unique culinary tradition, and is famous for its wines (most famous of which are Chianti, Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino). The summers in Tuscany are hot, usually without much rain. Spring (April and May) and Autumn (October and November) are dry, sunny days but the chances of rain are higher. The Winter has sunny, mild days and it can get very cold at night particularly in the hilly areas. As expected July is the hottest month with temperatures ranging from 23°C up to 30°C; January is the coldest month with about 7°C at the coast and about 3.5°C to 5.5°C inland. The busiest time in Tuscany (and Italy generally) is August when the Italians are on holiday. The main tourist season stretches from mid-April to the end of September.
Anghiari is our local town which is about ten minutes drive from Casa Leana. Many festivals are held there throughout the year (details at the house). The panoramic view from Anghiari is truly spectacular, made all the more so by the long, straight road running across the flat floor of the Upper Tiber valley from Sansepolcro and up the steep hill to the town. The view towards Anghiari is equally splendid, with the city walls rising up from a steep spur above the Tiber and the Sovara valleys. Anghiari is rated one of the most beautiful villages in Italy
"Uno dei borghi più belli d'Italia"
Citerna is the nearest hamlet to ours and houses a grocers shop and three or four fabulous restaurants together with a few other jewellry and knick knack shops. It is high on a hill with wonderful views of the valley. Again, festivals take place throughout the year (details at the house).
Arezzo is our nearest major town and is about 20 minutes drive from the house. It is set on a steep hill rising from the floodplain of the Arno - it has many fabulous boutiques and restuarants. There is an excellent market held there on the first Sunday of the month which is said to be the best in Tuscany and many other activities take place throughout the year (details at the house).
Siena is also nearby where the Palio di Siena is held - a famous horse race which is held annually in the middle of town. The Mille Miglia which is a famous classic car race usually runs through one of our nearby villages and is an exciting event to watch. These are just examples of the countless festivals and events that take place in the area throughout the season - a list of which you will find at the house.
A visit to Florence is another wonderful day out either by train from Arezzo (about 30 minutes) or by car from the house which takes just under an hour.
You can take a fast train from Arezzo to Rome (about 1 hour ten minutes journey) where you can spend a day sight seeing.
A visit to Lake Trasimeno is a great day out if you wanted a time off from site seeing. It is about a fifty minute car journey and you can swim, sunbathe and hire boats or take a trip on a ferry across to the different islands on the lake.
