The Puglia/Molise region

Apulia (Italian: Puglia) is a region of Southern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south. Its southernmost portion, known as Salento peninsula, forms a high heel on the "boot" of Italy.

Apulia is characterized by a succession of broad plains and low-lying hills. The central area of the region is occupied by the Murge, a vast karst plateau and Itria Valley, with its amazing stone made, cone shaped houses, the trulli.

Most famous places in Apulia are: the town of Alberobello, the capital of trulli, UNESCO heritage; the amazing Castellana Caves, the largest karsic cave in Europe; Castel del Monte, World Heritage Site, a 13th-century octagonal castle constructed during the 1240s by the Emperor Frederick II; the baroque city center of Lecce. Gargano, Salento and Itria Valley are the most popular touristic regions, famous for beautiful beaches, ancient towns, trulli, history, culture, and gastronomy.

The role that the cuisine plays in Puglia and Southern Italy's culture is proven by the fact that the Mediterranean cuisine received Unesco heritage award. Having warm and sunny weather most of the year and being surrounded by the sea, Puglia has traditionally been a region with excellent production in terms of wines, extra virgin olive oil, fruit, vegetables, wheat, seafood. The cuisine is truly Mediterranean: the best extra virgin olive oil is used almost for everything (even sweets); eggless pasta is made with the best durum wheat; very sweet and juicy tomatoes are used to make salads or excellent sauces. Legumes, such as fava beans, lentils or chick peas, are eaten very often. It is an ancient and peasant cuisine that has always been handed down from mother to daughter for centuries. Puglia is haven also for those who love good wines. Grapes include primitivo, negroamaro, nero di Troia. In Puglia best wines are made using the alberobello plants, very old vines that make outstanding quality wines.

Apulia is an excellent choice for a quality holiday for discerning travelers looking for sun and sea, history and culture, excellent food, nature.

Ostuni

Itria Valley, a depression due to karstic phenomena, spreads over Province of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto, and coincide with the lower part of Murgia upland (Low Murgia). The towns of Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Cisternino and Ceglie Messapica overlook Itria Valley.

The main Itria Valley features are: trulli, the typical ancient Apulian small round houses of stone with a conical roof; a large amount of ancient, magnificient olives from which olive oil is produced; vineyards from which they obtain high quality white characteristic wine, such as Locorotondo DOC and Martina Franca DOC.

There is no time to be bored in Itria Valley. The morning is the right time for sunbath and swim; the afternoon is for relax in the quiete and coolness of the country; in the evening there is plenty of choice among typical restaurants, popular festivals in counrty districts (every small country settlement has special days dedicated to its patron saints, local food or folk music); the night is the perfect time for a walk in crowded town centers, for a concert, for theater or for a beach or country disco.

Nobody has ever been deluded by the Apulian food and wines!
