Casa Cielo boasts of the finest stone carved doorway in the town if not the area. The obscure date chiselled into the artwork seems to read 1724 but it is believed that the house itself is of an earlier time dating back some 500 years. Although the splendour and size of the Casa cannot be appreciated from the medieval alleyways in which it sits, these are soon realised upon entering the property.

Once through the door you may feel as though you are stepping back in time as the house is slowly being restored to a former era when Italian murals adorned the walls. The domed ceiling hall with its stone carved pillars is depicted as a small chapel dedicated to martyr and warrior saints.

“CIELO translates as HEAVEN.”

Climbing the marble steps takes you into the large dining room from where you quickly realise the elevated position of the house. A tall windowed doorway opens onto the balcony from where one has splendid uninterrupted views. This vista can be appreciated even more from the roof terrace where evening drinks or dinner to sit and watch the sun setting is memorable, the balconies and terrace are available to all guests.

From the terrace to the east stand the mountains of the Pollino national park, while to the south the Lao plain and Scalea stretch out to the distant fishing town of Diamante and the island of Cirella. Look west and there lies the blue waters of the Mediterranean, its beaches less than a ten minute walk from the Casa's doors.

Scalea has for many years been a major holiday resort for the Italians. Having nine kilometres of unspoilt beach lapped by the warm waters of the Mediterranean and framed by a spectacular mountain backdrop is just one of the reasons for its popularity.

Calabria is now known as one of the last bastion of traditional Italian life, here for the duration of your holiday you can see it, live it, eat it, and be it!

The old town of Scalea dates back some 900 years, but with the new town at its feet one can experience the old and the modern ways of Italian life.

Take three national parks with scenery of outstanding natural beauty, a rugged coastline of breath-taking views, add warm hearted people and a fabulous all year round climate, sprinkle with the best of Italian cuisine and wine, welcome to Calabria!

SCALEA is a town of two parts; one is on the low plains of the river Lao, the other is as it ascends up the hill to the small community of the Centro Storico (historical centre), the old town. A very popular holiday destination for the Italians, especially the Neapolitans the town is slowly being discovered by more foreign tourists. However as the Italian holiday season is mainly August this means that Scalea and its residents live 'that' almost uninterrupted way of life for most the year. Yet this holiday idyll either in its own confines or on its doorstep has it all.

Clive, originally a Black Country man (Brierley Hill South Staffordshire/West Mids.) and Kathryn, a Lancastrian (Leyland/Chorley), lived in Holderness in the East Riding of Yorkshire for several years before moving to Scalea some years ago.

After much house hunting we found Casa Cielo, a house that had seen better days, yet its former glory years still shone through the disrepair. Twelve months of work bought the Casa to a livable state, and within eighteen months we had moved here. The rest of this story is better told over a bottle of wine one summers evening on the roof terrace, watching the sun sink into the sea.

Now established Italian residents we have embraced the Calabrian way of life and become a well known addition to the small community of Scalea's Centro Storico. We have built a popular and well established business that has entertained guests from all over the World, some who have returned time and again, and many we now class as close friends.

Over the years we believe we have gathered a great knowledge of the local area and Calabria itself. And are always willing to tell you of the history, legends and customs of places you may want to visit. We can tell you of the places to go and the easiest way of getting there. We can also advise you where to shop, and know the strengths and weaknesses of all the local restaurants, bars and cafés.

Our happiness comes from the satisfaction of making sure that while our guests experience the “Italian life” they also have a holiday they will remember for years
