The Ionian Islands are located, on the west coast of Greece and are composed of Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxos and Kythira. The islands are well known for their beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, charming villages and stunning scenic countryside which is verdant and flourishing with greenery and nature. Each Ionian island has a distinct character and between them they offer everything you could wish for from a Greek Island holiday.
Corfu or Kairkyra is one of the northernmost islands of the Ionian Sea. Located at the entrance of the Adriatic, near the coast of Epirus. The northeastern coast is quite close to the coast of Saranda in Albania and the southeastern near the mainland of Greece.
While in small distance, the paradise islands Mathraki Othonoi & Erikousa are located north and Paxos Antipaxos South.
Corfu enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate along with excellent beaches making it a popular destination for holiday makers. Corfu is very green compared to other Greek islands: hot and dry summers along with winter rain creates lush vegetation which is dominated by over 2 million olive trees. These olive trees on Corfu are the main cultivation, although Corfu's tourism now provides the most income.
Ipsos was known 10-15 years ago as a party resort, full of club 18-30's holidays. It is changing though. It is still a very lively resort - the discos and bars remain. The far side of the beach near the harbor is quieter. In Ipsos you will find romantic couples, parents with teenagers - who prefer the busier bars and clubs on the other end of the beach! The beach stretches along the roadside and gently curves round at the harbor end. Ipsos is set against the dramatic backdrop of the hills of the North East of Corfu on the left and to your right across the sea to Corfu town. The main road runs through the shopping and disco strip, lining the inland side whilst the clear water and clean beach occupy the opposite side.
Ipsos tends to attract young people due to its reputation. Groups of friends and teenagers enjoy it here. Also the resort is starting to cater for families with teenage children. Many couples enjoy Ipsos as it is a resort with plenty of life, but the edges are the quieter parts, such as the harbor end and the village behind the main road.
Take a look around Ipsos village behind the main road, or venture out further with a car visiting the quaint traditional Greek villages set in the hill side behind Ipsos, such as Agios Markos or Ano Korakiana.
