A short car journey will take you to West Witterings Beach, one of the country's premier Blue Flag beaches, a haven for picnickers and surfers alike. There you can enjoy the views of Chichester Harbour against the backdrop of the beautiful South Downs. Chichester Harbour (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) is home to some delightful Sussex villages. Take a lazy harbour tour from Itchenor or, if you are short of time, the ferry to Bosham, home of the fabled King Cnut and his daughter Gunhilda. Legend has it that Gunhilda was drowned at the Bosham Mill Stream (built by the Romans) and her remains were buried in the village church. King Harold sailed for France from Bosham, an event depicted in the Bayeaux Tapestry. Old Bosham and Bosham Hoe offer delightful photo opportunities at both high and low tide as does Birdham, the village that gives its name to one of the channels that flow into Chichester Harbour.
Houseboats on the Old Canal and yachts moored at Chichester Yacht Basin are two attractions; another is the Chichester Ship Canal. Stroll from Chichester Harbour to the Canal Basin at Chichester, passing Hunston and Donnington on the way. For the less energetic, there is always the barge cruises whilst jazz enthusiasts will not want to miss the summer jazz cruises during the “Chichester Jazz in the City Week” At the head of the Chichester Channel lies Fishbourne, a possible landing site of the invading Roman army of AD 43, where you will find the fascinating Roman Palace, featuring the beautiful Dolphin Mosaic.
