Throughout this entire province of northern Lazio can be found many good Etruscan and Roman archaeological sites.

Viterbo

Discover a truly authentic part of Italy by travelling back in time exploring Soriano's pretty winding medieval streets leading up to Castle Orsini. This uniquely beautiful town stands in front of Mount Cimini, at 1,150 meters, here you will find the vast wooded nature reserve of 'La Faggeta'. Winding roads with spectacular views take you to the ideal place to escape the summer heat, for cool walks and picnics or to the excellent restaurant / gelateria nestled in the shade of the wood. Only a few minutes drive from here brings you to Lake Vico with its secluded and shaded beaches.

Close to the villa is Europe's most well preserved and largest walled medieval town, the beautiful city of Viterbo (12 km), also the largest town in northern Lazio. Once the home of the Papacy, Viterbo offers an array of historical attractions, palaces, museums and galleries together with restaurants, lively bars and discos. Here you will also find the larger hypermarkets. The stunning oldest quarter of town 'San Pellegrino' is littered with antique shops and artisan markets. Viterbo houses the famed health spa 'Le Terme dei Papi' , for those who want a little pampering. This Etruscan area has been famed for its therapeutic waters since ancient times.

Soriano nel Cimino is just one of many picturesque medieval villages dotted around this area. Others nearby include Caprarola with its beautiful Palazzo Farnese, Bagnaia famed for Villa Lante and its grand gardens, Bomarzo home to the magical sculptures at 'The Monster Park' and Bagnoregio which is a must see for its beauty and unique setting. Each one of these towns celebrate their own festivals at different times of the year.

Soriano's famous, 'Sagra della Castagna' or 'The Chestnut Festival' is celebrated within the first two weeks of October. Here you can enjoy medieval shows and processions of a time gone by and have the chance to partake in the celebrations held at the local tavernas by tasting the fantastic regional cuisine. Soriano's large International Jazz Festival is held throughout July.

Other festivals include; Viterbo's Cultural Literature Festival 'Caffeina', held each year within the first two weeks of July. Where numbers of Italian authors and journalists descend on the town for evenings full of different events. Even if you do not understand the language this is a lively event to experience and be a part of. Another of Viterbo's events is the impressive ‘Macchina di Santa Rosa’, held on 3rd September. An historical parade through the streets of the town, of a giant 30m illuminated artistic bell tower weighing 3-5 tonnes and carried by the local men. The town of Montefiascone's 'Fier del Vino' is on 1st-15th August, this involves tasting local wines and foods on a picturesque 'Cantina Style Crawl' around the medieval streets of Montefiascone.

With the use of a car the beautiful gardens of Ninfa, in southern Lazio, are well worth a visit. A well kept secret, outside garden enthusiasts, this unique, once abandoned medieval town is now turned into a stunning botanical garden.
