Niseko/HIrafu is a small and very cool village nestled between the ski mountain and My Yotei, the local (dormant) snow-capped volcano. This, combined with the dominant westerly winds blowing over the Sea of Japan (only 8 miles distant) gives it the famous micro-climate producing around 12 meters of snow from November to May. Our house is a short walk into the village, and the local free bus passes our front driveway. We are surrounded by snowy fields in winter with lots of room for walking and playing.
Hokkaido is the great Japanese outdoors, with an awesome landscape and the best food imaginable. Add to this that Japan has invested in so much infrastructure that the facilities are far more modern and developed than you may expect.
The summers are warm and beautiful too, with golf (4 courses), white-water rafting, river salmon fishing, hiking, horse-riding and generally enjoying the local beauty. No crowds, friendly and helpful locals and picture-perfect surroundings. Our house makes the perfect base to explore the area.
Winter in Niseko is a skiing paradise, especially if you like deep, dry powder and open tree skiing. The woodlands are silver birch, so off-piste skiing is uniquely different - light, smooth and open.
Niseko Hirafu is a cool village, with an abundance of bars and cosy restaurants hidden in the snow. Drink local beers, eat Japanese or Western food followed by sake. Try sake with hot chocolate (our favourite!). There are natural hot-water outdoor 'Onsen' baths all around, where you can enjoy the outdoors and local culture. Surprisingly, our house is surrounded by Fresian cattle farms, fruit orchards and potato farms (as well as the golf course). Chocolate is a local specialty!
