The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
Milan is the capital of Lombardy and a world famous centre for all kind of trade fairs. Lake Como is 40 km north of Milan and Corenno Plinio is on the north east shore at 30 km passed Lecco.
Wealthy milanese families in the 18-19th century built their summer residences on lake Como, to get away from the warm and humid town. A number of villas and their parks are open to the public, such as villa Monastero in Varenna , Melzi and Serbeloni in Bellagio, Villa Carlotta and Balbianello not far from Menaggio.
Lake como has a temperate climate , as it has a sheltered position on the south side of the swiss alps springtime starts in april and autum ends in october. July is the hottest month ( 30 C) but a lovely afternoon breeze makes it very pleasant. Winters are bright and sunny , the mountain tops are covered with snow and in the higher valleys around the lake we do crosscountry skiing ,or just walk in a fascinating surrounding. You will have your morning coffee outside on a cosy marketsquare. Ski resorts are at 90 mins' distance ( St. Moritz, Madesimo, Bormio ).
Lake Como is already mentioned by the romans, and traces of the celts were found. The area was ruled by either Milanese, Como families , or the church. Watchtowers all along the lake ( to spot the invaders!)
Dervio / Corenno Plinio area
Corenno Plinio = the castle of Andreani and a cluster of houses around it. Casa Ortensia makes part of it, and in medieval times is was even interconnected with the castle. The castle is built on a rock and the houses around it are built onto the sloping rock, so lots of steep footpaths and steps. To reach Villa Ortensia from the car park you have to go down partly on a footpath and some steps. So comfortable shoes and no heavy suitcase.
Corenno Plinio has no shops, no restaurants, it is a very quiet hamlet which still give you the feeling of past times. Much the better! For shopping etc you depend on Dervio ( 4 km), Bellano, Colico and Varenna ( about 10 km)
Lots to discover: Lecco at 30 km is the main city and which italians adore to visit at least once in their life time as the story of the most read study book written by Manzoni " Promessi Sposi" played here.
The waterfall "Orrido" of Bellano is a thundering water mass in a very narrow canion
"Fiume Latte" near Varenna, the shortest stream in Italy which appears in springtime out of a grotto and disappears 600 m , never to be seen again.
Varenna is a well preserved coastal village with lovely shops, lake side restaurants and nice boulevard. the ferry boat takes you to Bellagio and Menaggio ( and the rest of the lake if you stay out for the full day! )
Chiavenna ( the old "chiave" key for the passage between Italy and central Europe) it has a wealth of historical buildings, the streets in the centre with their old portals and houses looking onto the river Nera are very distinctive.
Abbazia di Piona: located in a beautiful position near Colico, on a promontory separing the lake of Como from the lake of Piona, it was founded by the clunic monks in the 11thc entury, more over lake Piona is a resting place for migrating birds.
Sailing and surfing schools in Dervio, Bellano and Colico, some nice small sandy beaches makes lake como also very attractive to the young.
No wonder that the rich and the beautiful ( filmstars and footballplayers) today have discovered lake Como too!
