Home description
Casa Marinella has belonged to the same Milanese family over the last 150 years and was used as a summer retreat, to get away from the warm and humid town of Milan during the summer.
It is an exquisite home and rather unique as it is directly situated on the waterfront, from every window and the garden, you have a breathtaking view over the lake and mountains, of which you will never get tired.
Casa Marinella makes part of a cluster of houses, which surrounds the castle of Corenno Plinio. This castle was built in early medieval times and was a look out post for invaders who at that time travelled by boat from the alps. Due to it specific location on a rock , it overlooks a mayor part of lake Como , the name of the village dates back to the celts and romans.
Casa Marinella was built in the 16th century and was interconnected with the castle. To reach the house you have to walk some 60 steps down from the public parking ( comfortable shoes and lightweight suitcase!)
Today it has been wonderfully renovated , lots of family antiques, kitchen and bathrooms are modern, central heating.
On the ground floor is a small courtyard, entrance, dining and living room, cosy corner around a hugde fireplace, fully equipped kitchen , small terrace .
On the first floor are the two double bedrooms and single room. 2 Bathrooms one with shower one with bath, half bath.
From the terrace through the gardens which are on various levels you reach the small strip of rocky-gravel beach .

The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
Lake Como is on the south side of the swiss alps and has a temperate climate due to the sheltered position. The warmest month is july but in the afternoon a lovely breeze cools the temperature down. Lake Como has been a retreat for wealthy Milanese families for generations and they built themselves beautiful villas. Some of them are open to the public and their gardens are really worth to be visited. Near Varenna is the villa Monastero ( once a monastry). Villa Melzi is in Bellagio, Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, villa Balbaniello in Lenno, which can all be reached from Varenna by boat.and car ferry
Lake Como is near to interesting towns such as Lugano (Switzerland) , Chiavenna, Milan( shopping and trade fairs) Bergamo ( "Bergamo alto "historic part of the town) , even Venice can be visited in one day.
The high alps for skiing, hiking and walking are at 90 mins by car.
Springtime starts in April and Autum lasts till the end of october. The winters are normally bright and sunny, and you will have your morning coffee outside on the local market square. So lake Como has really four pleasant seasons, no wonder why today it attracts the rich and beautiful filmstars and footballplayers!
Lake Como is surrounded by high mountains ( 1000-2000 m above sealevel) which in summer give you a perfect opportunity to enter into another " world" . In the upper valleys there are verdant meadows and woods, crossed by ancient pathways good for walking, hiking and mountain biking. If you prefer to take the car, you reach some wonderful panoramic views points, from where you have a stroll to the nearby " malga" (shephard's hut) where they may sell fresh milk and cheese and serve a good plate of local pasta "Pizzoccheri"
Dervio / Corenno Plinio area
Corenno Plinio is on the north east coast of lake como and Corenno Plinio is just a cluster of houses grouped around the "Andreani castle" . To get to the lake and small harbour there are a number of steep walk-footpaths. No shops, no restaurants, just a very quiet, medieval hamlet. Car is essential for shopping etc, you depend on Dervio ( 4 km), Colico or Bellano. The well known Varenna is at 11 km , this is another beautifully preserved little coast-line village with ancients houses, narrow streets, some good waterfront restaurants, it has a boat-ferry stop for crossing to Bellagio and Menaggio.
Local places to visit: "Fiume Latte" near Varenna ( the shortest stream in Italy, which suddenly appears in springtime and vanishes in summer), l'orrido di Bellano: an thundering waterfall, cross the lake by boat and visit Menaggio and Bellagio
Dervio, Bellano, Colico offers lots of watersports facilities, have sailing and surfing schools.
there is a good train service on this side of lake Como between Milan and Colico
How to get there
Fly to Milan Malpensa or Linate, take the autoroute towards Como, Lecco, Colico, 2 hours Fly to Bergamo ( low cost airport Ryanair, Berlin air, Easyjet) follow Lecco, Colico, 90 min
