The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The house is situated in an area surrounded by the hills of the Corbiere that are part of the foothills to the Pyrenees. There are beautiful vineyards to walk in and steep rugged paths take you through the vineyards up into the hills. The terrain is rugged and dry. This is Cathar country, so the area is dotted with many famous Cathar castles, e.g. Queribus, Peyreperteuse, and Aguilar, to mention just a few.
It is hot and dry in the summer, but there are lots of places in local rivers specially designated to swim and cool off. If outdoor activities are your thing there is horse-riding quite close by where you can go for a day's trek into the hills should you fancy it. Bring your bike and go for fabulous rides on quiet country roads, but look out, they can be steep in places. On your trips check the local villages for an excellent lunch and rest before you set off again.
Visit Lezignan market on the Wednesday for fresh local produce, delicious cheeses and an amazing array of goods to purchase. It is colourful and very spanish in style, taste and colour. Lagrasse is another place to visit, the Abbey, fully functioning is a lovely restful place to visit, the newly refurbished cloister well worth seeing.
Then of course there is the sea, the beautiful mediterrannean - lovely sandy beaches, restaurants on the beach, showers to wash the sand off - delightful.
In the winter it can be cold, and it can be windy, but it is dry and sunny and never very cold for long. The autumn colours of the vineyards are just beautiful, and the walks still amazing. There are excellent ski slopes are about an hour and a half drive away.
The area is mostly famous for the Corbiere wines. Mostly red wine being produced, the Fitou wines are also produced here and the dessert wine known as Muscat. And recently some fine rose are being produced. So wine tasting adventures can be a great fun.
As I said before this is Cathar country, they were persecuted by Simon de Montford and basically massacred in the crusades. They sought safety in the castles of this region, namely Queribus, Peyrepeteuse, Puylaurens and others and they are well worth a visit. The plight of these people was made famous in many ways in the Kate Mosse book 'Labyrinthe'.
The village itself is very remote, more a hamlet than anything else. You won't be bothered by traffic noise, perhaps the odd tractor might disturb the peace, or the sound of the car horn as the van bringing the fresh bread to the village every morning lets you know it has arrived, and the croissants are lovely. Make sure you order some each day, for the next day or you could be disappointed.
The Spanish border is only a little over an hour away, and makes a great day out. More wine and great food.
I'm sorry there are no shops or cafes either in the village. The closest mini market is about a half-hour's drive away, and the closest large town, Lezignan, is about 50 minutes drive away. This is remote in the greatest sense of the word, but it is peaceful, and a real escape from the hurly-burly of life. But having said that, just very short drives away there are some great restaurants serving truly delicious meals and some gorgeous wines.
