The Costa Blanca/Valencia region
This is a region of mountain valley and dramatic coastlines, the land of the orange grove and paella.
Spain is a confederacy of different languages and cultures. Valencia is an autonomous region with its own language and traditions. Here history lives with the present in a kaleidoscope of old and ultra modern. Journey from the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias in Valencia city to the ducal palace of the Borgas in Gandia; go from the bright lights and high-rise of Benidorm to the cobbled streets of Guadalest: run with the bulls in Denia and battle the Moors and Christians in Alcoy; enjoy a place and a people who respect and celebrate their traditions and who embrace all with their zest for life.
Denia has something for everyone - restaurants, shops, sandy beaches and sheltered coves and a myriad of activities to enjoy including golf, scuba diving, quad biking, kite surfing and horse riding.
This cosmopolitan resort is ideally located for exploring the Costa Blanca with its impressive backdrop of mountain ranges and valleys. There is easy motorway access to the bustling centres of Benidorm (30 minutes away with its beaches and theme parks) and Alicante (o1 hour away with its shopping and beautiful old town). Just outside the town at El Vergel is the largest safari park in the area and if you need some retail therapy there is the shopping centre near Ondara.
From March to September it's fiesta in Spain. The biggest regional event is Las Fallas, held between 16 and 19 March when some towns build and burn huge effigies in the streets. Denia is one of those towns. It's main fiesta - la Fiesta Mayor - is held in the first and second weeks in July and incorpoates the running of the bulls - Bous a la Mar (Valencian for Bulls by the Sea) when the brave or the crazy can pit themselves against El Toro. In August Denia celebrates the Re-Conquest when the Christians defeated the Muslems to reconquer Spain in 12th century with a week of elaborate and sumptuously costumed events and parades. Throughout the summer there are fiestas in Denia and the surrounding towns.
If you want to know how to enjoy yourself then come to Denia in the summer.
