The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
Denia enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year and has over 19 miles of sandy coastline heading north to Gandia. The town itself is the capital of the area known as the Alta Marina and as such is a fully functioning market town for the area. In the town itself the main features are the castle, ferry port and marina which is also home to the town's fishing fleet. It is not therefore specifically designed with mass tourism in mind. As a consequence there are no tower blocks or overblown hotels. It is however a wonderful place to have a holiday at any time of year.
In the summer temperatures reach the 30s and the sea is very comfortable for swimming whilst in the Spring the weather is a delight and the abundance of natural flora and fauna is at its best. In the Autumn the beaches are quiet but the days remain warm, as does the sea, often until late October. Over the winter months there is rain and temperatures do drop off but the town remains alive because it is not dependent on tourism.
Denia / Santa Lucia, Els Galaretes area
Denia is very well placed for all kinds of activities at all times of year. Its coastal location makes it perfect for the watersports enthusiast as well as the sunworshipper whilst the town offers excellent shopping and good restaurants and a cultural calendar of real quality.
In the Spanish version of Trivial Persuit Denia is the answer to "Where in Spain are the most Fiestas? with the biggest being the Fallas in March and Moros and Christianos in August..
Other local attractions include the safari park where lions and tigers roam free as well as an area for children to mix with domesticated animals. Limestone caves and beautiful valleys are just in land for exploration or for the golfer there are two courses very close by.
Alicante and Valencia are cities that can be visited easily with all the attractions of city life and ,for children of all ages, Terra Mitica and Aqualandia are only forty minutes south by car or a train ride on the Costa Blanca express which runs from Denia to Alicate visiting every village and hamlet along the way! A must journey for the railway buff. Denia is by no stretch of the imagination a one event town.
How to get there
Denia is situated at the mid point between Alicante airport and Valencia airport giving the traveller a choice when booking flights. The A7 motorway links the two cities and has a junction at Denia. The travelling time from Valencia or Alicante is just over the hour and the distance is approximately 90-95 kilometres. Most of the budget airlines fly to the Costa Blanca but you will have to check which British airport is the most convenient for you. For the train enthusiast it is possible to get as close as Gandia before having to change to road travel. Gandia is approximately 30 kilometres north of Denia. A car is essential for this property and as a family we have used Rentspain as our main providers.
