The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
The Costa Blanca, often referred to as the 'white coast', is called so due to the white sandy beaches that stretch in excess of 270 km along the Mediterranean coastline. Described by the World Health Organisation as "one of the most environmentally perfect climates in the world", it boasts an average yearly temperature of 20*c, making it both a popular Winter and Summer destination.
For those who want to do more than just chill out around a pool, the villa is a great exploring base. The Gothic Architecture of Valencia and the lovely Cathedral combined with great International Shops might appeal, or the busy holiday resort of Benidorm with non stop bars and excitement may be more your cup of tea. In Benidorm you are certain to find activities to please all members of your party, such as water and adventure parks, aquariums, many tourist shops and an extremely active night life. Both Valencia and Benidorm are easily accessible by car.
The mountain village of Guadalest is highly recommended and is even quite busy out of season. It is known locally as the 'Jewel in the Crown' of the coastline. Built over a thousand years ago by the Moors and perched like an eagles nest on the top of the mountains, it has panoramic views in every direction. In the same area are the Algar Waterfalls where you can stand under the ice cold water used to film the Timotie Adverts. It is of our opinion that these are a bit over rated and commercialised, but probably worth a visit if you are in the area.
Denia / Monte Pego area
Monte Pego is an exclusive resort - some of the properties are residential and some private holiday homes.
The area is famed for its abundance of Mountain Spring Water, so no water shortage or cuts! You can fill containers in Pego with fresh mountain water for drinking or buy bottled, as fresh from the tap water tastes a bit salty.
Although we would recommend hiring a car for you stay, if you wish to just have a relaxing holiday around the villa it is possible to do so. The area of mountains that run behind Monte Pego have good roads, so exploring offers breathtaking scenery, with some quaint unchanged villages, and acres and acres of orange groves.
Close by (1.5 km) is the Costa Blanca Safari Park that is open most of the year. We have never been there ourselves, but have friends and family who have, and have been quite satisfied with it.
The village of Pego is nestled amongst a sea of orange trees and can be reached either by car or for the more energetic, cycle bikes can be hired from the bottom of the resort and the ride is flat with dedicated and clearly marked cycle tracks.
Close to Monte Pego there are local markets on most days of the weeks in different towns, probably the best being at Denia on Monday's, Pego on Thursday's and Oliva on Friday's. At the markets fresh produce, clothes, shoes and general household furnishings and goods can all be purchased at extremely reasonable prices. Some of the market traders can even be haggled down further!
There are sandy beaches along most of the coast line, from commercial ones in Denia, to nearly deserted ones between the towns. To get to the beaches, cross over the main N-332, and take almost any turning towards the coast. You can also access the beach via Els Poblets (shingle beach), and a nice beach with more facilities can be found in Oliva. The nearest beach is probably 10 minutes drive.
In another part of the mountain range, about 5 minutes drive away and available to all residents of Monte Pego, is the Bella Vista Club. This is a newly developed complex that boasts Gym and fitness facilities, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, beauty treatments, Mini Golf, Tennis, and bars/restaurants. For those wishing to play golf, the Bella Vista Club will make the necessary arrangements for you to play at one of the local courses. They will even arrange reduced rates.
How to get there
The villa is equal distance between Valencia and Alicante Airports (approx 1 hour) which all major budget and schedule airlines service. There is a large number of car-hire companies you can use at either airport and car-hire in Spain is generally very reasonably priced. Both flights and car-hires are easily booked on the internet.
