The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
The Costa Blanca offer miles of golden sandy beaches, subtropical vegetation and some of the best and most extensive ranges of tourist amenities in Europe. Denia is located on the coast at the northern tip of the Costa Blanca and at the foot of Montgo mountain.
Denia / Las Marinas area
Denia Denia is originally a seafaring town and is still a working port. As well as being a popular tourist destination Denia is also a thriving commercial centre. The tree-lined main street of Denia, Calle de Campo boasts shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and many services. While the old fisherman’s quarter consists of cobbled streets and white washed buildings.
Beaches and Water Sports Denia has around 14 kms of beaches that consistently win the European Blue Flag for safety and cleanliness. Along the beaches are children’s play ground equipment, volleyball nets, cafes and bars.
To the north of the town centre, with the exception of a short stretch of pebble beach about 7-8 kms out, the beaches are sandy and the water is typically warm throughout the 4-5 months of warm weather. If, however, you like to swim in clear waters off rocks, Les Rotes will suit you. It is situated to the south of Denia, beyond the port.
Denia offers diving, wind-surfing, kite-surfing, fishing, rowing, kayaking……for water sport lovers there is a huge range of options.
Bars and Restaurants Denia is host to a vast range of eating out places offering local seafood, regional dishes and tapas to international cuisine such as Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Indonesian and Greek. The cost of eating out can be extremely economic or much more extravagant depending on your budget but almost always you receive value for money.
The types and number of bars in Denia are numerous. You will find them within the town centre and surrounding areas, along Las Marinas, on the beach front and at the port.
Fiestas It isn’t always fiesta time in Denia but there are certainly many to entertain you including:- January – the Epiphany Parade and Pilgrimage to the heritage of Santa Paula. February – Carnival and the Mig March – the Fallas June – the bonfires of San Juan July – the town feast in honour of the Santisima Sangre, with steer baiting on the quay August – Festival of san Roque, with the Moors and Christians parade
The Castle Once the home to the Marquis of Denia it is now open to the public and sits in abode over the town from a height of 58m. The castle can be accessed both by car or on foot and provides a pleasant walk and some spectacular views over Denia. There are just a couple of small rooms to see which host relics and remains. Do note that the captions and explanations are written only in Spanish.
The Port The port has grown considerably and from here you can catch regular ferries to Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. In the new port area, accessible by car, some modern and stylish cafes, bars and restaurants have been opening giving views over the moorings or out to the Mediterranean.
Montgo Montgo is an oasis of unspoilt natural beauty. The whole area covers more than 2000 ha and is easily accessible from Javea to the south and Denia to the north. There are more than 600 species of flowers and extensive bird life. For the lesser seasoned walker there are several lower routes while for serious hikers the trek to the summit is a more demanding 753m. At the summit there are spectacular views to Los Molinos, a line of old windmills above Javea Bay last used in 1911.
A walk or drive out to the lighthouse on the cape provides an opportunity for more lovely views and a chance to see the ruins of the 14th century hermitage dedicated to Saint Antonio, after whom the cape was named. You can hire mountain, road and quad bikes as well as scooters. Mountain climbing, hiking and even hang gliding can also be arranged.
Golf Approximately 20 minutes out of Denia is Oliva Nova where the 18 hole golf course, designed by Jose Maria Olazabal, Club Le Sella, is situated.
Terramitica Advertised as one of Europe’s largest theme parks it is approximately 30 minutes from Denia in the direction of Alicante. It is a Paramount Park with a selection of rides, slides and action shows.
Mundomar Mundomar is a cross between a zoo and an aquatic centre. You can see flamingos, pelicans and a wide array of aquatic and tropical birds as well as turtles, sealions, penguins, bat caves and dolphins. There is an area specially designed for younger children and a large galleon from which you can see underwater views of the dolphins.
Nearby Towns Valencia An attractive port town about a one hour drive from Denia with various attractions such as an oceanarium, 3D cinema and bullring. It has recently undergone extensive renovations in preparation for the upcoming America's Cup.
Benidorm A well known Spanish holiday destination which offers water and theme parks, shopping and numerous kinds of nights out.
Alicante Alicante is built around a curved bay and remains a truly Spanish city. The second largest city in the Valencia region, Alicante offers visitors history, architecture, palm-lined avenues, shopping, beaches, restaurants and a lively port and marina. Approximately a one hour drive from Denia there is a host of activities for a day or evening out.
Javea Javea is a family-friendly resort with long stretches of beach and a busy harbour. The town lies on a bay within the promontories of Cabo de San Antonia to the north and Cabo de la Nao to the south. Attractive buildings, a safe beach, shops, bars and restaurants along with good facilities make Javea a popular tourist spot.
Moraira Another attractive tourist destination with a large expatriate community, it is positioned well off the main coast road. Moraira has a lovely seafront and a selection of up market shops, restaurants and bars.
How to get there
Denia is located approximately half way between Alicante and Valencia and travel time from both airports is around one hour. It is, however, slightly easier to get to Denia from Alicante if you are not familiar with the area. A selection of airlines fly into Alicante and Valencia (e.g. easyJet, BA, Monarch). As in most cases these days the earlier you can book the the cheaper the flight will be. It is worth shopping around as prices are competitive between all the airlines. Typically flight prices are comparable to either Alicante or Valencia. Solmar car hire company offers a range of car types for hire at reasonable prices. While a car isn't essential while you are there it does provide greater convenience and opportunity to visit other nearby towns and sites.
