The Mallorca/Majorca region
Deia is one of the most beautiful villages in Mallorca with spectacular views of the Teix mountains and the sea. Deia has a sheltered micro climate and olive, orange and lemon groves are planted on terraces leading up from the beach to the village. The road from Deia to Palma is surrounded by almond orchards and Mallorca is famous for the almond blossom in February. The islands vineyards are north of Palma within an hours journey. Deia was once the home to the poet Robert Graves, the composer De Falla and illustrator Arthur Rackman and now is a haven for bohemians, romantics and artists.
Deia area
Deia has many excellent restaurants, La Residencia 5 star hotel, tapas bars and shops within 3 minutes walk. Cala Deia is a 20 minute picturesque walk through the olive groves or a 5 minute drive, and there are two seafood bars on this beach. There are concerts in the village square and jazz nights each Saturday at the tapas bar. There is a weekly market in Soller which is a 15 minute drive. It has an interesting tram system brought from San Fransico and there are spectacular views of the coastline from the lighthouse . Valdemossa also a 15 minute drive was once the home to Fredrik Chopin. There are numerous walking paths from Deia to the towns of Soller and Valdemossa, both coastal and mountain and a good bus service gets you back from where you have wandered to. Don't miss Palma which is 30 minutes drive. It has all the excitement of a large cosmopolitan city but on a smaller scale.
How to get there
Fly to Palma then drive around Palma on Via Centura take exit to Valdemossa. After leaving Valdemossa take first right to Deia. Journey takes 40 minutes.
